FIELD CROPS FERTILIZERS
RECOMMENDATIONS
How much fertilizer is ne
eded for individual crops grown
in Georgia? Farmers have a
handy publication available this
week from the Extension Ser
vice which give the recommen
ded amounts of plant nutrients.
Copies of the new circular
are available at county Extens
ion Service Offices in Ga.
In this circular farmers
will find a summery of soil
test results from throughout
their area as well as other
helpful information to use in
selecting fertilizer.
The main part of the cir
cular is devoted to a listing
of recommended fertilizers for
individual crops.
Copies are available at your
local Extension Service
Office.
PINK BARK BEETLES
Woodland and home owners
alike should take note that pine
bark beetles pose a definite
threat in Georgia this year.
That warning from Ted Wal
ker of the Cooperative Exten
sion Service forestry depart
ment is brought about because
already attacks have been noted
in Georgia. Walker attributes
the attacks this year to the
mild winter.

service forester. He says that
now is the time to prevent
a serious outbreak.
The prompt removel of in.
tested trees is the first step.
This should be done as soon
as it is confirmed that ips or
southern pine beetles are pre
sent.
Walker recommends that the
removed trees be utilized as
quickly as possible, sprayed
with B-H- C and fuel oil or
burned.
The larger black turprntine
beetles attacks the lower port

be controlled. B-H-C or Lin

WHAT IS OBESITY?
The term “overweight” is
usually applied to those whc
are 10 to 20 percent above pro
per weight. “Obesity” applies
to those who exceed the norm
by 20 percent or more.
A person eating 100 calories
a day more than his body needs
(one rich cookie does it) could
feasibly gain nine pounds in
a year. Obviously, over a per
iod of ten years obesity is in.

WELFARE MYTHS
... and the FACTS
as seen by the
Georgia Department of Family and Children Services
MYTH:
Once on welfare; always on welfare.
FACT:
According to a recent study 37% of Georgia’s AFDC
families have been on welfare one year or less and
another 40% have been on the welfare rolls less than
three years. It usually takes a family in trouble about
two years to work out their problems. In addition to
financial aid the Department caseworkers and volun
teers help people become self-supporting and live
better by helping them seek community resources and
by offering social services. National HEW figures show
that about two-thirds of all families on welfare have
been on less than three years and that only 7.3% have
been on 10 years or more.
MYTH:
'Velfare people won’t work even if you find them a job.

FACT:
More than 82% of Georgia welfare recipients are too
old, too young or too sick to work. The rest are the
mothers and caretakers of dependent children who are
the only able-bodied people on the welfare rolls. In
spite of their limited education and many physical
disabilities over 30% of them are working full or part
time. More than 2,500 of them have enrolled in the
Work Incentive program in the past two years and 865
secured employment, thereby reducing welfare payments
almost $350,000 per year.
THE WELFARE DEPARTMENT IS MAKING AN
EFFORT TO EXPLODE SOME OF THE POPULAR
BUT MISTAKEN NOTIONS ABOUT WELFARE
AND WELFARE RECIPIENTS. THIS IS THE

FACTS.
