What does a forester do?
In this technological age the
average citizen is aware of
both the need and correspond,
ingly the actual tasks of each

forester, Brantley County. Al
most anyone is acquainted with
the farmer and agriculture, the
merchant and selling, the law.

The familiarity seems to end,
however, with the forester and
forestry. Each person has his
own differnet idea of what a

annually being pumped into the
county economy from forest
resources, the forestry occu.

Aid to Small

ATLANTA, - ( GPS ) U.S.
Sen. Herman E. Talmadge,
chairman of the Senate Agri
culture and Forestry Co
mmittee, has endorsed legis
lation that he hopes will boost
Georgia farm income by pro
moting more timber harvest
ing by small landowners.
Sen. Talmadge threw influ

introduced in Congress the ot-
her day. Said he:
“ The nation’s future wood
needs can only be met through

Vandiver
Vote On Anti-Busing Bill
THOMASTON (PRN) -
Former Gov. Ernest Vandiver
has criticized Sen. David
Gambrell for joining with
other liberal senators in voting
against a bill which would set
the most stringent anti-busing
rules ever passed by Congress.
Gambrell joined with 14
other senators, including Sens.
Jacob Javits of New York, Ted
Kennedy of Massachusetts and
Ed Muskie of Maine, in
opposing the measure which
passed Wednesday 63-15,
Vandiver said in a statement
issued here.
“In doing so,” Vandiver
said, “the appointed senator
opposed such senators as
Herman Talmadge and John
Stennis. In fact, he was
the only southern senator to
oppose the bill.
“He once again showed his
naivety and inexperience by
joining with the liberals, just
as he did on the vote which
killed the SST, in going against
the best interests of Georgians.
“The key anti-busing
provision in the Senate bill
would delay court
desegregation busing orders
until Jan. 1, 1974. The bill
also would extend some form
of federal assistance to
virtually every college and
establish a new program of
financial aid for needy
students, thus benefiting
every hard-pressed parent
trying to put a child through
college.

are not eligible for govern
ment loans on their crops.
False certification concerning
use of these materials is a
violation of federal law. Both
domestic and foreign buyers
are concerned about the level
of DDT and TDE in their pur
chases in certain areas this
year.
It is important for every
tobacco grower to avoid use of
DDT and TOE”, Mr. Dykes
said, ” because these pestl.
cides are a serious threat to
the market outlets for our to
bacco. If* even a small amount
of tobacco with DDT or TDE
content is included during the
redrying and packaging pro
cesses, large quantities of
other tobacco being processed
can be affected, resulting in an
adverse marketing situation”.
toward leniency in the treat
ment of criminals in our so
ciety. Yet there also app
eard to be a striking corre
lation between the recent de
cline in executions ( none since
1967 ) and the rise in violent
crime.
Come what may, as United
States Senator, I will oppose
any attempt by the federal gov
ernment to intervene in the
capital punishment laws of
Georgia or any other state.
I feel strongly that crime can
be deterred only when punish
ment is swift and certain. A
speedy and efficient system of
justice would deter many
potential criminals in this
country.
eastern states.”
The bill authorizes the Sec
retary of Agriculture to pay
up to half of the costs of set
ting up programs to boost for
estry management and harves
ting on privately owned land.
Federal funds could be used
for up to 80 percent of the
cost of seedlings and plant
ing expenses.
The Georgia Senior Senator
pointed out that 73 percent of
the private land is in tracts of
100 acres or less.
The small size of the forest
tracts make them uneconomical
for regular tree harvesting,
Talmadge asserted.

ERNEST VANDIVER
“Sen. Javits called the
anti-busing provisions the clod
in the buttermilk, which you
would expect of him, but you
wouldn’t expect a senator
from Georgia to agree with
such an ultra-liberal from New
York.
“Sen. Stennis of Mississippi
summed up my feelings about
the bill when he said, ‘While
this bill is far from perfect, it
will, for the first time,
establish a uniform national
policy dealing with
desegregation and compulsory
busing. I must support it.’
“Had I been in the Senate, I
would have.”
