LUMPKIN (PRN) - The

Using historic Westville,

citizens have planned an array
of activities ranging from a
greased pole climb on the
town square to a reading of

Westville’s gates open at 10

Maddox Discusses
Crime and
Punishment
ATLANTA, - ( GPS ) Lt.
Gov. Lester G. Maddox, in a
hard-hitting speech to the Eto
wah ( Ga. ) Lions Club, dis
cussed crime and punishment.
Here are some of the things he
said:
” Much of the responsibility
for today’s epidemic of crime,
which in one decade has grown
from 12 to 15 times faster than
the population growth, rests
with the courts and particular
ly with the U.S. Supreme Co
urt.
" In decision after decision,
the Supreme Court has con
tinued to favor protecting the
rights of the criminal, the
anarchist, the bomber, and the
rapist over the rights of the
innocent victims, other • law
abiding citizens and our law
enforcement officers.
“ And such decisions have
created an atmosphere in which
criminality and disrespect for
the law have been nurtured,
often tolerated, and even en
couraged. More crime has been
bred, and more lawlessness has
been unleashed upon our people.
“ The Murders, the rap
ists, and others who commit
capital crimes know that, of
tentimes, they won’t even be
apprehended at all for their
acts. And even if they are
Pete Wheeler Urges
Veterans To Up-date
Insurance Policies
Atlanta—Georgia Veterans
Service Director Pete Wheeler
is cautioning veterans to be
sure that the beneficiaries to
their insurance policies are
kept up to date. He said that
oversights are common and
“. . .these oversights are
causing mistakes which often
result in the ‘wrong person’
receiving insurance benefits
when a veteran dies.
“In some instances,” said
Wheeler, “deceased persons
still are listed as a veteran’s
beneficiary, and when the vet
eran dies his insurance bene
fits will be paid into the
estates of these deceased per
sons.
“Another common over
sight,” Wheeler added/‘occurs
when a veteran marries and
simply fails to list his wife as
beneficiary. More often than
not, the veteran’s parents
would still be listed as bene
ficiaries.
“Still another error fre
quently is made by the veter
an who gets a divorce, then
remarries but forgets to name
his new wife as his bene
ficiary. In a case like this, the
first wife can collect the vet
eran’s insurance when he
dies.”
Wheeler said that a lot of
headaches and heartaches can
be avoided if veterans would
take the time to check their
insurance policies periodically
and bring them up to date.
He said that any office of the
Georgia Department of Vet
erans Service will be glad to
assist veterans in taking care
of this all-important matter.
“Veterans should remem
ber,” Wheeler concluded,
“that changes in beneficiaries
cannot be made by a ‘last will
and testament.’ ”
caught, they know that the re
cord of the courts has been to
bend over backwards in their
favor.”
Maddox went on to say that
law enforcement officers are
not able to adequately protect
their own lives, and therefore
cannot hope to protect the lives
and property of the people. He
continued:
“ And when a Government
fails in its first responsibility,
that of protecting the lives and
property of its citizens, it can
not hope to adequately meetany
other responsibility.
“ And because the potential
criminal knows this, he is more
Ivkely to be willing to take his
chances and go ahead and com
mit his terrible act.
” In fact, those who now
commit crimes punishable by
death know with almost compl
ete certainty that they will
never be required to pay the
supreme penalty.
” Now, certainly the death
penalty is a harsh and extreme
measure, and I know of no
individual whose concern and
compassion for others or de
sire to help restore and re
build the lives of those who
have gone wrong surpasses my
own.
” But far more dreadful and
detestable than the taking of
the life of a criminal by so
ciety’s justice is the taking of
the life of the innocent victim
by the strangler, the rapist,
the bomber, or the weilder
of the knife or gun.”
” Personally, ” Maddox de
clared, ” I think it’s time that
we put some more gas in the
gas chambers, put some new
ropes in the gallows and plug
in the electric chair.”
He concluded by saying that
people who deliberately kill
other people forfeit their right
to live.
” And for the sake of our
country and those who could
one day become the helpless
victims themselves, we must go
back to the death penalty, "
Maddox asserted.
