GOLDEN ISLE
SPEEDWAY
RACE RESULTS
by Janis Overstreet.
Eddie MacDonald, Sr., from Tifton passed the cneckered
flag first at the Golden Isles Speedway Friday night, taking
the race from Rod Eulenfeld of Woodbine, who led the field
for 30 laps before experienceing mechanical problems.
It was a heartbreaker for Eulenfeld, who ran three more
laps before the finish and ended up in ninth spot.
With fourteen late models lined up, Rance Phillips, Way
cross , who is a leader in local popularity, and Jack ( The
Bushman ) Nolen, Jacksonville, put on a great show for over
a thousand race fans, as did Cuyler Payne, who pressed
hard on MacDonald and Eulenfeld before dropping back to
fifth.
While everyone was watching Larry Davis sideswipe the
retaining wall, Eddie MacDonald Jrs., No, 92 began to smoke
and swerve before catching fire. He managed to crawl out
uninjured, but his car suffered extensive damage and was
out of action.
Immediately following the hobby race, Danny Farmer of
Brunswick entered an official protest against the winner,
Tommy Riggins. He paid the protest fee and accused Rig
gins of being illegal. Track officials tore down Riggin’s
car and found that his car is legal and has a total of 246.2
cubic inches, well under the maximum limit of 300 for this
division.

CARE TIPS FOR OUTDOOR FURNITURE
Along with the arrival of warm weather comes the need
to spruce up outdoor furniture for summer use. Check these
care tips for various of outdoor furniture.
Soft breezes, golden sunshine and a carpet of green grass—
the perfect setting for setting outdoors. Unfortunately, some
rain must fall and place a slight responsibility on our pleas,
ures. That’s where a little know how comes in, care know
how. Outdoor furniture is bound to get caught in the rain,
no m atter how careful you are. Then, too, if your furni.
ture sits by the sea or in front of a beach house, it is sub
ject to salt air, plus extreme dampness. Check these care
tips for various types of outdoor furniture.
ALUMINUM.
Use ammonia and water for general cleaning, and buff
periodically with a car wax to restore the shine. Pitted
surfaces can be erased with steel wool pad. If you feel your
aluminum furniture is beyond refurbishment, paint with ex
terior enamel.
PLASTICS , VINYL
This type of porch and patio furniture requires a minimum
of care. Wash with a household cleaner, ammonia or soap
and water.
CANVAS
Scrub large canvas pieces with a brush and soapy water.
If canvas is machine washed, place canvas back on frame
while damp to prevent shrinkage. If the canvas has seen too
many summers and Is beginning to pale, paint-like dyes can
be applied. Brush on sealer after dye has dried to prevent
color rubbing off.
WROUGHT IRON
Wash this type of furniture with ammonia. If parts are
beginning to rust, rub with steel wool and apply a metal
prime coat, then a coat of outdoor enamel.
WOOD
Soap and water or ammonia will do the cleaning on wood
furniture. Reed and cane pieces require gentler rubbing with
a cloth or sponge. If repainting is necessary, scrub thorough
ly with turpentine and let dry for 48 hours. Use sandpaper
to remove loose paint and for smoothing cracks and rough
spots. ( Before starting to paint, brush off all sawdust).
Use exterior enamel paint, or if you wish to preserve a nat
ural wood finish, a clear exterior varnish. For redwood furni
ture, use special redwood varnish. Ask your local hardware
dealer about the new weather-proof acrylic finishes.
FLOWER BEDS
Flower beds have always been an important part of the
home landscape. Considerable planning should be done in
selecting the site as well as planning for the cultural prac
tices necessary for good plants. Present trends are to •
ward smaller flower beds for annuals and perennials. Main
tenance problems have contributed to small space for these
flowering plants.
A flower bed, no matter what the size, should be incor.
porated into the over-all design and be a part of it. As a
general rule, these beds are more effective with a suitable
background. This could be evergreen shrubs, fences or walls.
Flowers that are displayed in open lawn areas in the garden
often become quite unattractive after dying back, cut-flower
beds should definitely be in private areas of the yard.
Careful attention should be paid to color combinations. A
limited number of colors, massed and arranged according to
heights, will be more pleasing than a wide range of scattered
colors.
Raised beds of rock, brick or concrete are also being used
in present day gardens with nice effects. This type of bed
can serve as an important feature in the ground pattern,
double as a seat, divide areas of different uses as well as
being relatively easy to maintain.

Sen, Gambrell Urges
“Fair Deal” For South
ATLANTA (PRN) - U.S.
Senator David H. Gambrell has
appealed to the National
Democratic Party Platform
Committee to commit itself to
a policy of equal treatment of
the South in civil rights
enforcement matters, telling
them that “the time has come
for the Democratic Party and
those seeking the Presidential
and Vice-Presidential
nominations of that party to
take a specific stand on this
question.”
Gambrell made the
statement at an Atlanta
meeting of the Democratic
Regional Platform Committee.
In his prepared text, the
Georgia Senator documented
the discriminatory manner in
which the Federal
Government has applied and
enforced civil rights
legislation especially in the
areas of school desegration
and voting rights, and he
called on the party and its
candidates to stop “belaboring
the South and its people.”
Gambrell urged the party to
support three major issues in
order to achieve equal
treatment of the South. Le
sought suspension of extreme
school desegregation measures
such as forced school busing
and a cutoff of federal funds
until a majority of the
American school population
has been placed under a
uniform system of equal
educational opportunities with
uniform desegregation
requirements. He called for
the repeal of section five of
the Voting Rights Act which
requires seven Southern states
to obtain prior approval from
the U.S. Attorney General
before making even minor
changes in the voting laws of
voting procedures. Finally, he
demanded that the
Department of Justice and
HEW commit themselves to
enforcement of civil rights
compliance policies with equal
vigor in all parts of the
country. “HEW and Justice
have simply turned their heads
to avoid seeing segregation
outside the South,” the
Senator declared, “although

country?” the Senator
questioned.
Gambrell told the hearing
committee that every poll or

busing to achieve racial

unacceptable by a strong
majority (73%) of the people,
however the will of the people

Gambrell pointed to his

Democratic Caucus
unanimously on January 25,
1972. “It is that amendment
which I am asking that you

the Senator stated. He said
