OBTAINED BY DECEIT
USED TO POLITIC
A letter was obtained by deceit from the
files of the Board of Commissioners of
Brantley County during last week by a can
didate for Chairman of the Commission.
The candidate since obtaining the letter,
has made copies and shown it to persons
in Nahunta and Hoboken areas. A tale is
being told as the letter is being shown to
bring discredit upon the present commiss
ion.
I want to point out that the candidate did
not himself, request nor directly obtain
the letter. Apparently he delegated his wife
to do the work, although he could have ob
tained the lettqr merely by asking for it or,
could have had the same information which
is in the minutes of the county commission
meeting.
There are several facts that could have
been pointed out by the candidate, but he
has failed to do so.
The letter was written to the State High
way Department and concerned street
paving in Nahunta. The letter was written
in February of 1970 and addressed to Mr.
A. J. Strickland, Field Highway Engineer
at Waycross. Subject of the letter was to
inform the State Highway Department that
the Board of Commissioners declined to
ask for a contract to put in side walks
along U. S. 84 from the City Limits on the
west side of Nahunta to the City Limits on
the east side of town.
At the time the letter was written there
were 1.794 miles of streets under constr
uction, (one of which runs directly in front
of the candidate's house, over on the west
side of Nahunta. ) At the same time, the

Board of Commissioners were attempting
to get some paving done out-side the City
Limits. The Board obtained a contract and
constructed with the Road Department, ap
proximately 2 miles of county road paving
in the Hickox Community.
The candidate apparently was not inter
ested in another letter in the same file
addressed to the present Mayor of Nahunta.
That letter stated that the Board of Comm
issioners were turning over to the City of
Nahunta the completed 1.794 miles of
streets which the County Road Department
had just completed, and which had been
accepted by the State Highway Department
Inspectors. This letter was dated April 14,
1972.
The candidate showed no interest in ano
ther letter in the same file folder that
showed there are five streets requested for
paving in Nahunta. These are: Bryon,
Burton, Charlton, Wilson and Hughes
Streets. In Hoboken there are two streets
requested for paving, these are: Capital
and Church Streets. The above streets were
requested by the Board of Commissioners
at the request of the current Mayors and
City Councils of both cities.
The candidate aspiring for Office of
Chairman of the County Commission should
be advised of all facts on a case before
starting a whispering campaign to bring
discredit.
All books and records in the Office of
Chairman of the County Commission are
public information and available to any one
at any time. I put them on display as requ
ired by law during the Commission Meeting
on the first Tuesday of each month.
