Gov. Carter Swears In
Bicentennial Commission
ATLANTA (PRN) - Gov.
Jimmy Carter predicted a
nationwide preoccupation
with the observance of
America’s 200lh anniversary
as he swore in public members
of the Georgia Commission for
the National Bicentennial
Celebration at the capitol
Wednesday.
The governor urged the
commission, whom he termed
“a fine group of Georgians,”
to develop an orderly schedule
for the bicentennial
observance in Georgia for the
years ahead.
‘‘One of your
responsibilities will be to
search out authentic events for
proper observance,” Gov.
Carter said as he noted that
Georgia was one of the earlier
members of the United States.
He commented that he has
found an intense interest in
the observation and that he
had spent as much time on
selecting members of the
bicentennial commission as he
did selecting judges for the
Supreme Court.
New members on the
commission, and the
organizations they represent,
are Mrs. Gerald Fling of
Savannah, Children of the
American Revolution; Mrs.
Harold I. Tuthill, Savannah,
Daughters of the American
Revolution; and Cherokee
County Commissioner
Trammell Carmichael, Georgia
Assn. of County
Commissioners.
Also, G. Harold Northrop,
Callaway Gardens president,
Georgia Chamber of
Commerce; Smyrna Mayor
J.C. Porterfield, Georgia
Municipal Assn.; Roy Chalker
Jr., Waynesboro True Citizen

end of the site is three long
planks surrounding a triangle.
The other end of the site is
identical to the one shown a

end of the site to the other end
is about 180 steps. Sides of
the triangle are about three
feet while rectangular pieces
are about two feet by eight
feet.
The site is located about
five miles south west of Hic

car. The structure is about
fifty feet off a private road.
“ Anyone knowing the pur

Demorest Springs Park will provide a spacious setting for games
and contests at the town’s 81st annual Fourth of July
celebration. (PRN)
TOUR
GEORGIA
DEMOREST (PRN) -
While a number of Georgia
towns point with justifiable
pride to their “old-fashioned”
Fourth of July celebrations, it
would be hard to find a
community with a more
legitimate claim to a genuine
old-time fling of a Fourth than
Demorest. This year, the
Habersham County town
launches its 81st annual.
Fourth of July celebration.
Scheduled for 10 a.m. to 10
p.m., the attention-getting
opener of the day’s packed
events features 15 performing
skydivers from Ranger Camp
in Dahlonega, along with
public displays of helicopters
and other Ranger equipment.
Demonstrations will be given
on the athletic grounds of
Piedmont College.
Demorest Springs Park,
downtown, will serve as
setting for a multitude of
games and contests planned to
entice participants of all ages.
There will be foot races, sack
races, cake walks; a soap box
derby and a tug-of-war. Grand
Ole Opry performers will
provide inspiration for a
country and western talent
show. A new feature on this
year’s itinerary will be the
Promelets Cloggers, 14 girls
from Franklin, North
Carolina, who recently won a
state clogging contest.
The day will end as
colorfully as it began with a
street dance and fireworks
display.
The visitor should allow an
extra day for visiting the
attractions surrounding the
mountain town. Nearby is
Toccoa with its shimmering
falls on the grounds of the
Toccoa Falls Institute. Toccoa
Falls, reached v ; a a short
woodland walk, has a sheer
lacey drop of 186 feet. Only a
few miles northwest of
Demorest is Helen, a charming
Bavarian-like village set
surprisingly in a scenic north
Georgia valley. Imported gift
and gourmet items are a
specialty here. A drive west
leads to Dahlonega, where the
visitor may relive the
country’s first major gold rush
at the Courthouse Gold
Museum, or try his own luck
with panning at Gold Hills of
Dahlonega, a recreated mining
village.
For further information on
Demorest’s Fourth of July
festivities, write: Department
of Industry and Trade, Tourist
Division, P.O. Box 38097,
Atlanta, Georgia 30334.
