PASTOR'S PEN
What Is a Independent Baptist Church?
By Rev. Benny L. Beckum, Pastor
Grace Baptist Church, Nahunta.
This is a question that is going through the minds of many
people here in Brantley County.
It is what all Baptist Churches used to be before Baptist
Churches began ro organize into Conventions and Associations
to accomplish a united purpose. INDEPENDENT BAPTISTS
do co-operate effictively for the common cause of World
evangelism through the combined efforts of a Fellowship.
Relationships of the local congregations. We feel involve
ment determined by " membership ” in a Convention often
creates a situation in which the program of that Convention
becomes more important than the local Church that created
it, causing the lustre and importance of the local Church
ministry to be obscured.
AU Baptist Churches that are Baptist believe and accept
the one statement of Faith of all Baptists that have ever
cherished that name. There are churches called Baptist,
who practice footwashing as an ordinance and do not even
believe in eternal security of the believer, that we do not
consider true Baptists.
As a Independent Church we do not choose to become in
volved with organized Conventions and Associations because
all too often we have discovered that many Colleges and
Seminaries sponsored by organized Conventions, while being
supported by local churches, have professors who do not
believe or teach doctrines that we feel are Biblically true
and vital to the Christians Faith . such doctrines as the
verbal Inspiration of Scriptures and the Deity and Virgin
Birth of our Lord are included in these. We find the local
churches make their existance a reality by financial support,
yet their voice and convictions do not carry enough influence
to correct the errors that arise in these institutions.
We have an “ All Bible ” Sunday School. There are no
Quarterlies.
A special emphasis is given on missions. Most Convention
or Association oriented Baptist Churches send their mission
offerings through some planned program where distribution
is left to the discretion of some Committee, because it is
not the desire of the local church to designate it offerings.
INDEPENDENT BAPTISTS commit themselves to designated
amount of monthly support for a definite missionary or miss
ion project and the congregations receive personal letters
and receipts from those receiving contributions. We feel
this brings the congregation into a personal relationship
with its missionaries and mission projects. These mission
aries are asked to personally visit the churches.
You may ask yourself this question.
What are the beliefs of a Independent Baptist Church?
WE BELIEVE ...
1. in the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments
as verbally inspired of God, and that they are of supreme
and final authority in faith and life.
2. ...... In one God, eternally existing in three persons:
Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
3. ...... That the Genesis account of creation is to be
accepted literally, not allegorically or figuratively; that man
was created directly in God’s own image and was not a matter
of evolution or evolutionary change of species.”
4 That Jesus was born of Mary, a virgin, and is
true God and true man.
5 That man was created in the image of God, that
he sinned and thereby incurred not only physical death but
also that spiritual death which is separation from God; and
that all human beings are born of a sinful nature, and in the
case of those who reach the age of moral responsibility, are
sinners in thought, word and deed,
6. That the Lora Jesus Christ died for our sins
according to the Scriptures.
7 In the ‘ Eternal Security ’ of the believer; that
it is impossible for one born into the family of God ever to
be lost.
8 In the resurrection of the crucified body of our
Lord, in the ascension into heaven, and in His present life
there as High Priest and Advocate.
9 That the Church of our Lord is a visible , local,
selfgoverning body of believers who have been baptized and
that there are only two ordinances: baptism and the Lord’s
supper, both of which are administered only to believers.
10. ... That all who receive by faith the Lord Jesus
Christ are born again of the Holy Spirit and thereby become
children of God.
11 In the bodily resurrection of the just and the un-
just, the everlasting blessedness of the saved, and the ever
lasting punishment of the lost.
12 That Jesus Christ is coming again to take His
Church out of the World, at which time the tribulation begins
and will end at His coming to earth to rule and reign for
1,000 years as Kings of Kings and Lord of Lords.

Church, you are invited to attend our services at Grace
Baptist, Nahunta, on U.S. 301 South.

Delegate Expenses
To Vet Conventicns
May Be Deductible
Atlanta — Members of vari
ous veterans’ organizations
who attend national conven
tions as duly-elected delegates
from their respective posts
should be pleased to know
that some of their expendi
tures may be deductible as a
charitable contribution when
they file their federal income
tax returns.
Georgia Veterans Service
Director Pete Wheeler said
that the Internal Revenue Ser
vice has ruled that “a tax
payer who gives his service
gratuitously to an organiza
tion, contributions to which
are deductible, and who in
curs unreimbursed traveling
expenses, including the cost
of meals and lodging, while
away from home overnight in
connection with, the affairs
of the organization and at its
direction, may deduct the
amount of such unreimbursed
expenses in figuring his taxa
ble income.”
This means that a dele
gate may deduct as a “chari
table contribution” the actual
unreimbursed expenses for
travel, transportation and a
reasonable amount for meals
and lodging while attending
the national convention.
Instead of deducting actual
out-of-pocket expenses in
curred in using a personal
automobile for transporta
tion, delegates may use a
standard mileage rate of six
cents a mile. Also, parking
fees and tolls attributable to
such transportation may be
deducted as separate items.
Expenses such as theatre
tickets, sightseeing, nightclubs
or other personal expenditures
cannot be deducted. Also
non-deductible are the travel,
meals and lodging expenses
for delegates’ wives and chil
dren. Wheeler said, “Dele
gates should save all records
such as receipts and check
stubs in order to claim these
deductions from their tax
statements. If questioned, a
delegate must also be able to
furnish proof that he was a
bona fide representative of his
post, chapter or barracks, and
that none of the deducted ex
penses was reimbursed and
that he was actually present
at the convention sessions.”
The IRS says that in order
to claim convention expenses,
delegates must itemize their
deductions on Income Tax
Form 1040.

For Re-Election
TO THE CITIZENS OF BRANTLEY COUNTY:
I hereby announce that I have qualified as candidate for
Office of Chairman, County Commission, Post No. 1.
During these next few weeks, you may hear many things,
good and bad, that the current Boa,rd of Commissioners
has done or that it has failed to do.
I ASK YOU TO CONSIDER:
Each year during my term In h office, this Board
has set the tax levy at 12.4 mills. ( This is the same
as set by the previous Board during their last year
in office).
When I took office with this Board in January, 1969,
there was $4,924.00 in the bank and according to the
Tax Collector, more than 80 percent of the tax money
had been paid in and turned over to the previous Board.
On January 1, 1969, this County owed $91,378 in
liabilities.
The Road Department heavy equipment was virtually
worn out, many machines were 20 years old or older.
Today the County is completely out of debt and has
cash money in the bank that will hopefully see us thr
ough the end of this year.
Today this county has one new motor grader, one
new dump truck and another new truck that tows the
low bed trailer. Cash money was used to pay for this
equipment.
Only through proper management could the above had been
done. I take credit for a good part of the above as well as
for any failure of this Board.
As a taxpayer myself and the interest that I know every
taxpayer here in Brantley County has in taxes, all the above
is good. It has been many years since this county has been
in a position to begin to give the service that it should have
been doing for years but could not, due to poor management.
I hereby ask for your continued support and confidence
in the Democratic Primary Election.
Sincerely
George F. Stewart
TO THE TAXPAYERS AND VOTERS OF
BRANTLEY COUNTY:
Facts concerning income and expenditures
from both Brantley and Charlton County
Audits have been made available to ma
There are a great amount of difference in
income reflected for the Sheriff's Depart
ment of each County. The yearly expendi
tures of both Departments are generally the
same.
Income for Charlton County for 197.1 as
reported in Charlton County's Audit is in
excess of $ 50, 000.
Income for Brantley County Sheriff's De
partment for the same period was less than
$ 7,000.
WHY THE DIFFERENCE ?
1. Is the above figures true?
Certified Audits of both Counties say
they are.
2. Is the above a reflection of a full time
Sheriff and a part time Sheriff?
3. Why are the figures so greatly different
for Sheriff Departments from similar
size counties that are adjoining?
4. Both Sheriff's are elected to work full
time. Why does Brantley's work part
time?
When elected, I pledge to be a full time
Sheriff for Brantley County.
