When was the last time you seen ants? Were they white
in color? If so, they probably were not ants, but termites,
commonly called wood lice. Termites differ from ants by
not having the constricted waist. The flying ants, or the
winged reproductive form which are seen most frequently,
are brown to black in color with four large fragile wings.
They look like flying ants, but all four wings are the same
size, while the front wings of ants are larger than the black.
Mentioned above is the reproductive form of termites.
There are three different forms, Including the reproductive,
in a termite colony. The most numerous form is the workers.
These are the small, white, wingless, soft • bodied insects
that do the work in the colony. The soldiers are similar,
except for large heads and powerful jaws. Their function
is to protect the colony.
It is important to know how and when termites attack wood.
Winged adults swarm from older colonies in spring and late
summer. They mate soon after swarming and find a place
to start a colony. Most of the time, termite swarms are the
first indication of presence.
However, piles of discarded wings in buildings show that
a well • established colony is present. The wings are often
found around doors and windows where the Insects have tried
to escape. The Eastern Subterranean Ter mite found in Georgia,
requires moisture. Without it, he cannot survive. For this
reason, he constructs mud tubes through which he travels.
These tubes, built up over masonry foundations, are another
sign of termite infestation. The termites feed on soft spring
wood leaving the hard summer wood intact. This gives the
infested wood a laminated appearance.
Onw way to control termite destruction is to use proper
building construction, mainly to keep buildings dry beneath.
Keep wood and other cellulose materials, in which termites
breed , away from foundations, also away from the fill dirt
around foundations.
No W'tod should be in contact with the ground. Proper ter.
mite snields are es jetive against termites. Poison all areas
beneath concrete slaos, porches, and carports before pouring
concrete. The type of poison found most effective and economical
so far is 0.8 percent Gamma Isomer of BHC, 1 percent Chlor,
dane, 0.5 percent Dieldrin, and 8 percent DDT. This will
give you protection for five to eight years.
To treat buildings, dig a trench six to eight inches wide and
down to six inches above the top of the footings. Apply the
insecticide at a rate of two gallons per linear foot in the bot
tom of the trench. Then place soil in the trench and apply
two gallons per 10 linear feet to the loose soil in the trench.
Treat the soil around foundations, walls, and pipes on all sides.
Soil beneath concrete slabs should be treated at the rate of
one gallon to 10 square feet of soil surface. However, if
the slabs have already been poured, it is necessary to bore
holes beneath or through them and spray the insecticide
under them.
The next time you see an ant, look again. He just might
be a termite.

Gambrell Supports “Strong
Military Defense System”
COLUMBUS (PRN) - U.S.
Senator David Gambrell told
Muscogee County citizens here
that he supports a strong
military defense system for
the nation and that military
strength is “the most
important factor in keeping
peace throughout the world.”
In a speech to the
Columbus Lions Club,
Gambrell said he had
“supported fully” all
recommendations of the
Armed Services Committee.
He said last year’s committee
hearing had resulted in a
sound defense budget, and
that current hearings are
underway on next year’s
budget.
The Armed Services
Committee, which is chaired
by Senator John Stennis of
Mississippi, is considering an
$85.4 billion dollar military
budget for fiscal year 1973 —
$6 billion more than last year.

Gambrell quoted the President
in saying the additional funds
are needed for development of
strategic weapons systems and
to cover military pay
increases.
The Senator said military
strength could not be
“measured singularly in dollars
spent.” He said that according
to Senator Stennis, however,
each recommendation of the
President would be looked at
closely to assure that the
national security is not
endangered through
development and procurement
of “costly and ineffective
weapons systems”.
Gambrell said the Armed
Services Committee had done
“an outstanding job” and that
he anticipates supporting the
committee’s recommendations
again this year.
The Senator also announced
that he is co-sponsoring
legislation to initiate a survivor
benefit plan for retired
military personnel which
would bring retirement
benefits, more closely in line
with non-military retirees of
the federal government.
The bill would provide that
surviving dependents of
military retirees receive 55%
of the retiree’s annual pay at
the time of death.
Georgia’s Junior Senator
also reiterated his support for
a bill sponsored by Senator
Strom Thurmond of South
Carolina which extends
pension benefits to veterans
and widows of World War I, as
well as certain priority
treatments in hospitalization
and medical care.
While in Columbus, the
Senator restated his position
on opposition to forced school
busing and equal treatment of
the South in civil rights
enforcement matters.
