DEAR ABBY: Recently, a 17-
year-old Florida boy pleaded
guilty to possessing hallucino
genic drugs. He had also been
charged with violence toward
a Miami Beach police officer.
Judge Alfonso Sepe sentenced
the youth to one year in the
County Stockade and four years
probation. The comments of the
Judge so impressed me that
I ordered the transcript from
the Court Reporter so that I
may read it to my own children.

Wagoner and Miss Parton

industry trade publications,
and Wagoner,s syndicated tele

the broadcast industry as the

show of its type. It features
the same entertainers and
personalities who comprise the
roadshow troupe.
Even though Porter’s latest

June 26th, it has been cited
by the leading trade publica

as the record they feel will
most likely ” break ” into
national popularity charts for
country music very soon.
Dolly Parton, Wagoner’s

they have to sit in this court

Porter Wagoner was born
near West Plains, Missouri,
and grew up in poverty with
his parents on a small dirt
farm. At an early age he
learned fiddle, then guitar; soon
he was singing, especially when
working by him self in the fields.
Although extremely shy, Wag
oner sang and played guitar for
customers in the grocery store
where he worked as a clerk,
following his family’s move in
to town.
The store owner decided to
sponsor a radio show featur
ing young Porter’s singing.
This led to Wagoner’s first
big break, a job at radio sta.
ion KWTO in Springfield. This
n turn led to a contract with
RCA Victor Records in 19-
52, then to a performing spot
on the Ozark Jubilee, which
eventually originated for net
work television and radio in
Springfield.
Moving to Nashville in No
vember , 1956, Wagoner join
ed the Grand Ole Opry the
following February - just when
country music had begun an
out-of-contrcll sales and popu
larity listings.
About a year ago, Wagoner
decided he was going to con
centrate on bringing his stage
shows into smaller communi
ties rather than the large cit
ies. He felt many country music
fans were being deprived of
top - name country enter,
tainment, so he directed that
his show would break away
from the large • city circuits
so that the entire family could
enjoy big-name country music
within shorter traveldistances.

“Meanwhile, you put yo u r
selves above everybody else. I
feel sorry for you.
“I want you to think of this
for one year, and the reason
why I say it:
“If you are sick, a doctor
will treat you and he won’t be
on drugs. The lawyer who rep
resents you won’t be high oh
drugs and the people in whose
custody you’ll be won’t be on
drugs.
“Your astronauts are not on
drugs, and your President is
not, ahd your legislators are
not.
“And your engineers who
build the bridges that you drive
across and the tunnels that you
drive thru are not on drugs,
and those who build the planes
that you fly ih and the cars
that you drive are not.
“Neither are those who build
the bathrooms that you stink
up with your lousy, rotten drugs.
“None of them have been on
drugs, and this is because of
people like your mother and
father.
“But in the world of the fu
ture,” Sepe went on, “the same
may not be true. Teachers, doc
tors, lawyers, legislators—prod
ucts of the hew drug-oriented
generation — may well be high
as kites.
“You won’t know whom to
send your child to, or whom
to trust your life tn.”
Sepe sighed and closed the
case file.
“Let’s see what kind of world
you leave to your children,”
he said, “before you talk about
the world that we left to ours.”

Veterans
Corner
Q — I am the widow of a
World War II veteran who died
in 1969. Shortly after his death
I applied for a widow’s pension,
but was denied because we had
been married only three years.
May I now reapply?
A— Yes. Under current law,
a widow who had been married
to a veteran at least one year
before his death (formerly five
years) is eligible for pension.
Q— Do veterans using the
current G. I. Bill receive more
money than veterans under pre
vious G.I. Bills?
A— Yes. Measuring payments
in constant dollars, the current
G.I. Bill is slightly more liber
al. Proposed legislation during
the 92nd Congress to increase
benefits would give today’s vet
erans an ever greater advan
tage.
