GOLDEN ISLE
SPEEDWAY
RACE RESULTS
by Janis Overstreet.
As the news travels around the racing circuit about the
growing bounty on Rance Phillips, more and more late model
drivers are showing up at the Golden Isles Speedway to run
for the money.
Even though 18 sportsmen competed Friday night for the
bigger purse, Phillips again breezed across the finish line
first in his fast Chevelle, showing that it takes more than
just a bounty to beat him.
This was Phillips’ sixth win in a row at the local track
and 14th straight in the past two months on the dirt track
circuit. Add it all up and what do you get ? Better than $5,
800.
Jack Nolan received a large ovation when he arrived with
his new Plymouth Satellite in tow. Nolan fans were sure
that the Fugitive had met his match at last, but their hopes
were short lived as Nolan ran into a streak of bad luck in
the heat race.
Rod Eulenfeld went into a spin on a turn and Cuyler Payne
swerved to miss hitting Eulenfeld; however, they did connect
and it was at this point Nolan smashed them both, knocking
himself and Payne out of the race for the evening. The Nolan
Brothers Race Team promises to be back in action next week
and is out to beat Phillips.
Pit Steward Larry Kicklighter proved that he can move fast
when he has to, and the fans got a real scare when Barefoot
Joe Scott’s Ford and Kermit Buie’s Chevrolet collided and
jumped the pit rail, sending Larry running for higher ground.
The most progressive race team of the season, Power
Brake Service, headed up by W.A. Hamby, Jr., of St. Simons
Island, arrived in full force with three race cars and five
drivers, Hamby himself winning the Hobby Division feature,
as well as a 10 lap heat, and his running mate Brent Thomas
right on his bumper coming in second.
Carter Ramsey, Tommy Riggins and Johnny Whitley drove
the Power Brake vehicles in the Late Model 40 - lapper,
Ramsey crossing the finish line fifth to move his point •
standing up two places.
