Screw Worm Threatens;
Irvin Warns Farmers
ATLANTA (PRN) - Once
the scourge of farm livestock
md wildlife, the repugnant
crew worm again threatens
Jeorgia and the Southeast,
according to Commissioner of
Agriculture Tommy Irvin.
Not since the late 50s when
a revolutionary new peacetime
use for atomic energy helped
to eradicate the pest, has the
screw worm fly offered such a
serious threat, ■■■■Hl
Federal and
state livestock
health officials
have mounted
a beefed-up
campaign in an
attempt to
prevent the
pest from
crossing the
Mississippi River following one
of the worst screw worm
seasons in the history of the
Southwest.
Cattle and other livestock
losses in Texas and other
Southwestern states have been
running heavy all summer,
with more than 55,000 known
cases in Texas alone.
The screw worm fly lays its
eggs in the open wounds of
warm blooded animals. When
the eggs hatch, the larva feeds
on the meat and blood of the
animal which serves as its
host. Unless the pest is
discovered and the infested
wound treated, the animal
suffers terribly until death
ends its misery.
Agricultural scientists,
studying the problem in the
early 50s, found that the
female screw worm fly made it
only once in her lifetime. This
knowledge, coupled with the
knowledge that freezing
weather killed native
populations except in South
Florida and Mexico, helped
scientists develop one of the
most revolutionary insect
eradication programs ever
attempted.
Fly rearing laboratories
were set up in Florida and the
Southwest in which male
screw worm flies were hatched
and reared by the millions.
Upon reaching maturity the
healthy, laboratory reared
males were sterilized with the
use of radioactive cobalt, then
released by aircraft over the
Southern United States from
the Atlantic to the Pacific.
The sterile male flies bred
with native females flies which
produced eggs incapable of
hatching into larva and the
pest was eradicated from the
Southeast. Following
eradication in the Southeast,
federal officials then turned
their attention to the fly
wintering areas of Mexico and
have been working with the
Mexican government to knock
out the pest in that country.
Although a great deal of
progress has been made in
controlling the migration of
screw worm flies from Mexico
into the Southwest, the
dangerous pest managed to
move into the Southwest and
reinfest that area of the nation
this summer.
The Mississippi River serves
as a natural barrier to help
prevent the fly from entering
the Southeast. In addition, all
livestock moving from the
west into the Southeast must
be individually inspected and
accompanied by health
certificates. Such animals are
also required to be sprayed or
dipped with approved
insecticides under the
supervision of state or federal
inspectors. Even vehicles
transporting such animals
must be cleaned and
disinfected prior to entering
the Southeast.
To date, no screw worm
infestations have been
discovered east of the
Mississippi River, according to
Irvin, and with winter coming
on officials hope that freezing
weather will get here before
the screw worm fly does, but
farmers in Georgia and
throughout the Southeast are
being urged to watch their
livestock carefully and contact
their local veterinarian or
county agent if they find fly
larva in an open wound of any
warm blooded animal.
“Os all the pests that have
plagued farmers, the screw
worm fly was certainly the
most disagreeable and the
most repugnant to deal with,”
according to the
Commissioner.
Irvin pojnted out that to
enable the screw worm fly to
get a toe hold in Georgia and
the Southeast again would
mean an increased cost in the
production of beef and swine
as well as undeterminable loss
to deer and other wildlife.
The Commissioner said the
Animal Health Divison of the
Georgia Department of
Agriculture is working closely
with federal officials to
prevent such an occurance but
that the farmer and livestock
producer must and should
play an equal role in a
determined effort to protect
Georgia and the Southeast
from the ravages of one of the
most detestable insects known
to man.

RISING FAWN - The ever
growing enthusiasm for
handcrafted creations, with
emphasis on oldtime skills
shaped to 20th century tastes,
is perhaps nowhere more in
evidence than at Plum Nelly —
“plum” out of Tennessee and
“nelly” out of Georgia.
Set for Saturday and
Sunday, October 7 and 8, the
annual event known as the
Plum Nelly Clothesline Art
Show will once again take
advantage of north Georgia’s
golden season. In its 26th
year, the outdoor exhibit has
proved to be enormously
popular over its quarter
century, with art lovers from
all over Georgia and
neighboring states returning
year after year.
Plum Nelly’s “gallery” is a
winding path carpeted with
oak chips. It cuts through
dense woodland to a bluff
which looks out over a
patchwork of Georgia
farmland toward distant
mountains. Booths and
clothesline hangings of artists
and craftsmen are strung along
this path for relaxed, informal
viewing.
This year’s artists - all local
talent living within a radius of
50 miles - range from painter
to potters, from wood carvers
to metal sculptors. There will
be creations of glass and
driftwood, contemporary
copper panels, traditional
Cherokee baskets, original
jewelry, hand-woven woolen
garments, translucent candles
and cloth dolls.
Each year a new puppet
production keeps the youngest
members of the family
entertained while their elders
browse in the colorful
woodland setting. Sandwiches
and snacks, homemade cakes
and coffee are served at food
