Phony Welfare Doctors
Bilking Georgia Citizens
Last July, Georgia Consumer Services warned that
con artists were posing as representatives of various
government agencies in attempts to bilk Georgia
citizens. We are sorry to report that GCS has now
received information showing that such swindlers are
still active in the state.
In recent cases, it is
reported that a con man
(remember, it could be a
woman too) approaches
someone who receives welfare
payments from the state. This
person claims to be a doctor
representing the State Welfare
Department (Division of
Family and Children’s
Services). He tells the welfare
recipient that he has to
submit a physical
examination. He claims that
the person will lose his welfare
payment if he does not have
the physical. The person
naturally allows the phony
doctor to “examine” him or
her, and then the phony
doctor charges SSO for the
examination. Further, in some
cases, an accomplice goes
through the house while the
bogus examination is going on
and steals anything of value.
There are several things
wrong with this. First of all,
medical doctors do not
conduct complete physicals in
anybody’s home. Physical
examinations are given in
doctors’ offices and clinics
where the proper equipment is
installed. Secondly, the State
Welfare Department rarely
sends a doctor to someone’s
home. Ordinarily, if any
medical checkup is needed,
the welfare client would be
notified and allowed to pick a
private physician of his own
choosing or go to the county
health department. In the rare
event that a doctor would be
sent to someone’s home, the
person would have been
notified in advance by the
welfare department or his own
case worker. Finally, in the
event that some medical
service is required by the
welfare department, the
welfare client does not pay the
doctor .. .not one thin dime.
He is sent a slip by the
Division of Family and
Children’s Services to fill out
showing that the work was
done, and they pay the bill.
There are variations of this
BANANA BOUQUET
hasn’t “gone bananas.” She’s
simply dramatizing the point
that bananas are a great
value, as well as being an
excellent nutritional food,
two vital points for budget
minded and health-minded
young marrieds. Bananas are
about the same price as 20
years ago, according to “The
Banana Bunch,” a newly
formed industry-sponsored
center for consumer informa
tion about bananas.

Don’t let anybody into your'
