By L ESTE R MADDOX >
Why the attacks upon Lester Maddox by the Atlanta
Constitution, Governor Carter and two state senators? Why did
the Governor first publicly call for abolishing the office of
Lieutenant Governor and then switch to leading the fight to
“strip” the Lieutenant Governor of Georgia? And why did The
Atlanta Constitution first, and then United Press International
call one senator an “avid supporter” and another senator “a
long-time political ally” of Lester Maddox when neither has ever
been an “avid supporter” or “a long-time political ally of Lester
Maddox?”
The answer is simple and true. Lester Maddox as Lieutenant
Governor belongs to the people .. .not the politicians. Lester
Maddox stands as the last major roadblock to the power-mad who
are working to destroy the last stronghold of representative
government at the Georgia State Capitol.
(along with my staff) of trying to carry a workload more than
double any previous administration at the lowest cost possible.
We have not doubled the number of politicians coming into the
office, but we have had an increase of more than four times the
number of letters, phone calls and visits from moms, dads,
children and others who come to the Office of Lieutenant
Governor for help and we are not going to turn back ONE
Georgian regardless of what the “Deceivers’ Quartet” (The
Governor, the two senators and the Atlanta Constitution)
charge ...
of starting my personal secretary at $8,000.00 annually, even
though when I moved to the office of Lieutenant Governor in
1970 she took the place of a secretary “making over $11,000.00
annually.” And I’m guilty of starting every secretary at less than
their counter parts were making before we moved into the office
of Lieutenant Governor and even though some other legislative
secretaries are being paid $9,000.00, $9,700.00, and $11,000.00
annually . . .NO secretary in the office of Lieutenant Governor
receives as much as $9,000.00 annually. But the “Deceivers’
Quartet” will not tell you these truths because its efforts are to
try and discredit Lester Maddox and deceive the people.
of reducing the air transportation cost of the Lieutenant
Governor. During the first eighteen months of the four year
period before my being elected Lieutenant Governor, the cost
was $41,574.00. The cost for my first eighteen months was
$20,631.00. This is a saving of $20,943.00 in eighteen months,
less the cost of my using a state car sometimes.
of further working to reduce cost by spending NOT ONE
NICKEL for lodging, meals, cabs, etc., during my first eighteen
months in office, while in the first 18 months of the term before
mine the cost was $2,127.00, and although Governor Carter and
members of the Senate provided me with a driver and security
aid, probably because I was a former governor as well as being
Lieutenant Governor, I am guilty of releasing the man early in my
administration in order to cut expenses and save money.
And I’m also guilty of paying my administrative assistant
$17,500.00. The Atlanta Constitution told the truth in this
instance, but what its writers would not tell you is that Mr. Zell
Miller and Mr. Mac Barber also were paid at the annual rate of
$17,500.00. In addition, the same position paid $15,600.00 in
1969 before I started serving as Lieutenant Governor. With one
five percent and one ten percent raise durihg the past three years,
the man employed before my arrival would be making
$18,000.00 rather than the $17,500.00 being drawn by the very
able former senator Mike Padgett.
The attacks upon Senator Padgett and Mr. Blankenship are
mean, ugly, and unfair for their only guilt is that they know
Lester Maddox. And the cause of the attacks is more upon
representative government than upon me for I am the major
obstruction to the Governor and his forces in their drive to wipe
out legislative independence at the Georgia State Capitol.
