WHY NOT LIVE FULLY?
Once we appreciate that
healthful living is more a
matter of having the right
kind of emotions than any
thing else, it becomes
apparent that the most
important aspect of living
consists in training and
handling our emotions.
So far, education has con
sisted largely in educating our
intelligence, which is quite
necessary also. But one can
have a very high intelligence
and very bad emotions, and
live perfectly miserably. If it
' u
were a matter of one or the
other, life would be sweeter
with good emotions and low
intelligence.
In fact, if one goes about it
right, it is easier to acquire
good emotions than good
intelligence. And there is
actually no need for anyone
to have bad emotions.
And don’t forget that good
emotions have two general
effects. First, they replace the
bad emotions which were
producing stress effects; and
secondly, they produce their
own pituitary effect which is
an optimal balance of
endocrine function. It’s this
optimal balance which pro
duces the state which we
human beings have always
called, “Gee, I feel good!”
But the first effect, that of
replacing the bad emotions
and their stress effects, is
equally important.
