Georgia: Second
In Nation in Job-
Training For Vets
ATLANTA - Figures just
released by the Veterans Ad
ministration show that Geor
gia ranks second among the
fifty states in the number of
veterans who are engaged in
job training under the GI
Bill. Georgia’s total of 1,058
-veterans taking job training
during fiscal year 1971 was
topped only by North Caro
lina, which had 1,387.
The increase apparently is
part of a joint effort by the
Veterans Service Department,
the Veterans Administration
and the State Department of
Labor, according to Georgia
Veterans Service Director
Pete Wheeler.
Explaining how the new
program works, Wheeler said,
“Under this new procedure,
an on-the-job training pro
gram may now be written up
and approved prior to a vet
eran actually beginning his
training.
“Before the new program
was initiated, a veteran was
required to be employed in
a particular firm before an
on-the-job training program
could be approved. It was
necessary for a veteran to
seek out an employer who
might, in turn, apply for an
on-the-job training program
to be approved for his par
ticular place of business.”
Although no employer is
under any obligation to hire
a veteran, the new program
does offer certain advantages
that will benefit the employer
as well as the veteran.
“For example,” said
Wheeler, “an employer can
now set up an on-the-job
training program and then
have this information furnish
ed to veterans who apply at
the state employment service.
This will greatly assist an
employer in recruiting an em
ployee who is suitable to a
particular job.”
Since the new program
was activated on Oct. 1, 1971,
many Georgia business estab
lishments, which have job
openings, have received “pre
approval” for on-the-job train
ing programs. Wheeler advised
interested veterans to enroll
with the state employment
service which maintains em
ployer “banks” or listings of
firms providing on-the-job
training.
Employers interested in
establishing on-the-job train
ing programs may obtain
complete information from
any office of the Georgia
Department of Veterans Ser
vice.

ATLANTA (PRN) - Soon it will be time when ambitious
cooks will be making and giving those fantastic, elaborate, and
festive fruit cakes all wrapped up in beautiful foils and
cellophanes enticing all that come within reach of the rich
aromas. Fruit cakes with candied fruits, nuts, spices, wine, and
brandy will be already for the holiday season. Fruit cakes are
different from most cakes in that they are noted for keeping
well over long periods of time and that usually they are made
with a minimum of batter. For a great family treat or extra
special gift, you may enjoy trying this old fashion fruit cake
recipe that is loved by many.
