Control Fire Ants on “ Your ”
Property
Fire ants in Brantley County
have been fought by U.S. De*
partment of Agriculture and
Georgia agencies. Since Plane
applications of insecticides ha
ve been stopped by ecology
movements, it is now important
for each person to take care
of his own place.
Fire ants can create a ser
ious health hazard for adults,
children, pets and livestock
if they are not controlled.
Damage can be caused by
fire ants to vegetable crops,
injures nursery stock and fr*
uit trees, attacks new born
animals and wildlife and in
terferes with the best use of
pastures, fields , lawns and
recreation areas.
Major problems in the use
of farm and lawn machinerj
can be caused by the hard,
crusted mounds and when dis.
turbed the ants can be dan
gerous to any animal around.
Anyone needing fire ant bait
can come by the County Agents
office and we will be glad to
give you some and tell you
how to use it.
Our Extension animal scient
ists say a forage test on feed
is just as important as a
soil test on the land that pro
duced that feed.
INFORMATION
Testing hay for feeding value
is especially important this
year, because dry weather in
Brantley County has made it
necessary for a lot of farmers
to give their cows supplement,
al feed.
It is virtually important to
provide all necessary nutrients
to beef cows if you expect
maximum calving percentage
and healthy cows and calves.
Os course, it is just as import,
ant to avoid oversupplying nu
trients so that production costs
can be kept in line.
Every cattleman in Brantley
County knows that hays vary
tremendously in their protein
and energy content. There are
several reasons for this —
stage of maturity when har
vested, fertilization, crops us
ed, and harvesting and storage
methods, among others.
But you don’t have to guess
about the feeding value of your
harvested forage crops. Have
a forage analysis run through
your county agent’s office. Add
the necessary extra protein
for maintenance and product?
ion, and feed enough forage or
grain to supply the necessary
energy.

SWEET POTATO TIPS
Its the time of the year to
really enjoy sweet potatoes-
Some good potatoes have been
grown in our county and some
good ones have been in the
market at stores. Too, a fair
ly uniform canned potato can
be purchased any time of the
year in mashed, cut, or whole
varieties. Sweet Potatoes are
a good source of vitamin A
as well as adding color and
variety to meals.
Since the county 4.H ban
quet last week, several people
have requested the recipe for
the potato souffle which was
served - A basic recipe for the
souffle is given, but home
makers are reminded that the
natural sweetness of this po
tato varies so the good cook
will have to determine the a
mount of sugar she actually
needs. Too, the main secret
is using the mixer to beat
the eggs, potatoes and liguid,
along with adding the fruits
the family likes best • The
mashed potatoes may be cook
ed by boiling, baking, or us
ing a canned potato.

HOW MANY SNAKES?
Ever wonder how many
kinds of snakes there are in the
U.S.? Wildlife specialists say
they number 116. Nineteen'of
them are said to be dangerous.
Os the dangerous kinds, 15
rattlesnakes, two are moccasins
and two are coral snakes. There
is no need to fear the rest'of
them.
