Minutes Nahunta
City-Council
The regular meeting of the
City Council of Nahunta was
held February 19, 1973 at 7:30
P.M. with Mayor Dick Purcell
presiding. The minutes of the
last meeting were read and
approved by the Mayor and the
Council.
A motion was made by Al
derman Chancey to pay $4300.
on the bills, motion was second
ed by Aid er man Dykes and
carried.
A motion was made by Chan
cey for the clerk to call Mr.
Beasley with the S.C.L.,find
out what type fence they re
quired to enclose the play •
ground in which they have been
working on, and to tell him to
go ahead with the lease, motion
was seconded by Aiderman Gr
iner and carried.
The Mayor told the Council
that he had ordered the speed
limit signs for the colored sec
tions and that they should be
here in a few days.
Aiderman Griner made a
recommendation to the Mayor
that he have the Street Depart
ment to get all water meters
to working.
A motion was made by Ai
derman Chancey for the Clerk

derman Griner that the City’s
1965 Ford Firetruck be kept
in the City Limits at all times,
that if one is needed outside
of the City limits to send the
City’s stand-by truck, motion
was seconded by Aiderman Al
tman, Aiderman Dykes voted
aye on motion, Aiderman Ch
ancey not voting on motion.
Aiderman Chancey told the
Mayor and Council that eff
ective of this date that he would
no longer be in charge of the
Fire Department, that he would
be a voting member of the
Council only.
A motion was made by Ai
derman Griner that all Depart,
ments be put back in full ch
arge of the Mayor, motion was
seconded by Dykes and carried.
There being no further busi
ness the meeting adjourned.

his home, when one tree lod
the local customs...! goofed.
In Germany are men who are
known as “ Chimney Sweeps ”
and do this work. They are
also highly esteemed by the
people. My home was not only
two story but also back break
ing to clean. I had just acc
omplished this feat one day
when my doorbell rang. Ans
wering, I found two men dress
ed in black from hat to boots.
Amidst “ hand waving and bro
ken German ” I got the mess
age that they were there to
clean my upstairs chimney.
Hesitantly, I let them in., and
beheld in dismay the snow,
mud and soot tracked In and
up..and up was worse litter
ally covered in soot! Out -
raged, I awaited them at the
foot of the stairs with a mop
and broom, informing them to
clean up their mess. Seconds
of bewildered looks passed be
tween them and to me among
more hand waving. At last they
cleaned it up and clearly in
formed me they would be back
in plain English. I Informed
them, not unless you take your
boots off at the door and clean
up I Sure enough they returned
...but were turned away when
they refused to take off the
boots. I later learned, I had
committed a “ great sin ”,
as these men are eagerly wel
comed into the German Homes
mostly because they are sup
posed to bring good luck! I
had still rather have a clean
house than “ good luck ” of
that sort!
If anyone has a humorous
story in their life., let me
print it..laughter is good for
the soul. Which also reminds
me of Mr. coHins who de
clares his wife tells everyone.,
he is the man who fixed her
Cuckoo Clock so the little bird
now backs out and asks what
time is it.
Many folks have said and I
too, wonder why don’t we ever
have any of the “ good old
days ” events...such as, Sq
uare Dancing, Cake Walks, Box
Suppers, Outdoor Picnics and
Peanut Boilings. Isn’t it still
possible ? Hiose were good
times of the past and many
would enjoy them again.
