THEY MAKE THIS HEWSPAPER BBQ SAFETY HINTS Danger lurks in even the most peaceful surroundings and many backyard cookouts have ended in tragedy because the chef ignored common sense safety rules. Place your barbecue grill out in the open, away from anything flammable. Make cer tain it has sound footing and is away from primary activity areas but is set up to allow room to work. Safe grill equip ment is important so be sure your forks, tongs and spatulas have long handles. Use heavy glove-style potholders and dress in a non-flammable a pron. Avoid loose flopping clothing that might catch fire. Keep children and pets a way from the grill, and never remove the grate until it is cool. Don’t dump out coals until they are completely ex tinguished, and don’t leave them without adult super vision after the barbecue is finished. If a sudden change in weather occurs, move your cookout to a protected area, but never barbecue in a garage or other enclosed space unless it is ventilated adequately, be cause glowing goals will pro duce deadly concentrations of carbon monoxide. Perhaps the most danger ous aspect of barbecuing is igniting the coals. Avoid using gasoline or other explosive fuels. The best starter is one that is dry, non-explosive and non-poisonous, such as a new product calledFire-Stix, which is available wherever you buy barbecue equipment. Large segments of the audiences lis tening to Dixieland and blues, as well as the more up-to-date jazz/rock and soul, were com posed of people 25 years old and younger.
