Sen. Nunn Backs Probe
Os U.S. Postal Service
WASHINGTON, D.C.
(PRN) - “The U.S. Postal
Service is slower than the
sands of an hour glass and not
nearly as dependable” with
that stinging indictment,
Georgia Senator Sam Nunn
announced his intention to
support an investigation into
the chaotic operation of the
postal service.
A Senate resolution was
introduced earlier this month
which would require the
Committee on Post Office and
Civil Service to conduct open
public hearings into the
conduct of the postal service.
After a complete investigation,
this committee will report its
findings and recommendations
for legislation to the Senate by
August 31,1973.
Under the 1970 Postal
Reorganization Act, Congress
gave up all authority over
postal rates, employee pay
scales and postmaster
appointments. The new postal
service was given the power to
borrow money for investment
and facilities, to improve
employee-management
relations, and to adjust postal
rates and mail classification
systems.

one stamp was used to complete
the design; yet when separated
each stamp has a complete,
impressive picture. The stamp
was designed by Mr. Paul Calle
after photographs taken by the
astronauts during the flight of
Gemini 4. There are some
who add another first to this
issue: They insist that the Sp

“The postal service was
designed to reestablish the
ailing postal system on an
efficient, financially sound,
business like basis,” Nunn
points out, “but since I took
office in November,
complaints have continued to
pour in about the slow,
inaccurate, and at times,
complete failure of the postal
system.”
“Why does it take three
days for a letter to travel four
miles in Decatur!”
“Why does it take five days
for a letter to travel from
Macon to Atlanta, a distance
of ninety miles.”
“Why must a letter from a
citizen in Rome to his
neighbor across town be
routed through Atlanta for
processing, then back to Rome
for delivery.”
“These are questions
Georgians ask me everyday,”
Senator Nunn said. “In some
sections of this country, it
takes longer for the mail to be
delivered by ‘1973’ efficiency
than it did by stagecoach in
the 1890’5.”
“An answer must be found
to this disturbing debacle”
Nunn insisted, “for- its not

Scott’s standard Postage St

for the Astronaut, 1332 for the
Capsule, and 1331 a for the pair.
The 1970 Catalogue value for
fine, unused stamps was 10
cents each for the stamps sep
erated, 20 cents for the pair.
In 1972 the value had jumped
to 75 cents each for the stamps
seperated and $1.50 for the
pair. The Scott Catalogue also
shows that there were 120,
865,00 stamps issued and 667,

Allergies Relieved By
LP-Gas Air Conditioning
ATLANTA (PRN) - The
growing popularity of
year-around gai
air-conditioning is indicated
by the results of a survey in
which 90 percent of the
reporting home owners who
had such an installation said it
had a favorable effect on their
health.
They stated that through
dust and odor control the ai^
in their homes was fresher and
purer every season of the year.
And many of their families
achieved relief from allergies.
Other advantages of gas
air-conditioning they cited
included efficient removal of

snow, nor sleet, nor gloom of
night that has stayed the
faithful courier from his
appointed rounds, but bogged

computer cards and ribbons of
red tape.”
The Georgia lawmaker said,
“Some of the complaints to
my office have come from
dedicated postal employees
who are concerned because
they aren’t able to provide the
service they once offered.
They are disturbed because, in
many cases, unhappy postal
patrons believe the employees
are to blame.”
“One such letter from a
postal employee cites
ineffectiveness of new
machines, jobs that have no
function in moving the mail,
and continuous overtime
schedules as key factors in the
low morale of postal
employees,” Nunn explained.
“I have noted that the
Postmaster General himself,
Elmer Klassen has admitted
that postal service deteriorated
during December and
January,” Senator Nunn said,
adding, “I don’t think he will
find anyone to disagree with
him.”
urs 56 minutes. On the third
orbit Edward A. White took
his historic walk in space for
about 22 minutes.
No errors occured during the
dramatic flight of Gemini 4
but a dramatic error did occur
in the printing of the stamp;
the red stripes of the flag on
the capsule were omitted in the
Upper Left Position of plates
number 29322 and 29325. Wh
ile the error may have been
embarrassing to the Postal Au
thorities it was welcomed with
joy by stamp collectors around
the world. Scott’s catalogue
does not list a value.
Here is a follow up on the
article about the world’s rar
est and most valuable stamp,
the 1856 British Guiana One
Cent ( the Penny Black). The
owner recently let it be sold

excess summer moisture from
the air, and the fact that it was
possible to filter air for
healthful, whole-house
ventilation without heating or
cooling during in-between
seasons.
Because LP-gas service may
be installed virtually
anywhere, homeowners in
suburban, rural and outlying
sections may enjoy the
benefits of total indoor
climate control. Families living
in areas served by LP-gas can
easily and inexpensively add
air-conditioning to their
present LP-gas central heating
system.
