Spring
herons
The Varsity Herons close
down a four week spring pr.
actice this Friday, March 23
in a game against the highly
praised Seniors of 73’ The
Seniors feel very confident of
victory since they have many
standouts closing out their
high school football career.
The Varsity team has a good
neuclus of lettermen and are
confident they shall be the
victor.
Talmadge speaks to
president on drugs
Mr. President there is a
vicous and unprincipled pre.
dator stalking our society,
and it is long past time that
we took forceful action to
eradicate him. For years, this
vulture has been preying on
our most priceless asset ••
our young people.
I refer, Mr. President ,
to the drug pusher.
One of the marks of a
civilized society is its ability
to temper justice with mer.
cy. But these people repre
sent the lowest and most vile
form of human life, and they
deserve neither sympathy nor
compassion. They do not de.
serve it because they never
exhibit it to another human
being.
I am introducing legisla
tion today that will treat th
ese vicious predators the way
they should be treated — as
public menaces. I refer sp
ecifically to the man who is
not, himself, caught in the
iron grip of drug addiction,
but who lines his pocket with
the money of the desparate
individuals whose lives he is
destroying.
He moves among our youth
like a silent, deadly disease,
mercilessly seeking out the
gullible and the ignorant, tak
ing them by the hand, and le
ading them into the most wr
etched and bleak form of hu
man existence.
Mr. President, there is
much that we can lay at the
door of this public menace.
First, there are the young
lives which he has enslaved.
He has led them from youth
ful innocence into the des
perate hell of drug addic -
tion.
The young man or woman
who is ravaged by drugs can
not think of his or her fam-

The Senior team is made
up of several outstanding ba
cks and linemen. The probable
starting line-up will include
Backs, Paul Langford, Rob
ert Thomas and John Middle
ton. The linemen are Gary
Strickland, Ricky Carrecker,
Ernest Cobb, Curtis Rainge,
Albert Hall, Mike Stone, Cur
tis Patten, Gary White, and
Bobby Finney.
The varsity team had about
ily or job. Their entire liv
es are dominated by the dr
iving need to secure more
drugs to feed their habit —
and this is a need which can
only increase. Rapidly, their
habit becomes so expensive
that they cannot support it
through legal means — so
they turn to a life of crime.
Everytime this public men
ace makes another conquest,
it is as though a pebble were
dropped into a pond. The first
ripple represents the addict
himself, and all other ripples
are the innocent victims that
he robs, beats, and evenmur
ders to feed his habit.
While I have pity for the
addict, he, at least, made a
voluntary decision to become
involved in this vicious cir
cle.
But the law-abiding citizens
whose property and lives are
snatched from them to be laid
at the feet of this public
menace by the unfortunate
people he has enslaved have
been involved entirely against
their will.
The legislation which I pro
pose today represents a dir
ect effort to remove this pub
lic menace. It provides that
any person who is convicted
of distributing more than four
ounces of so-called “ hard
drugs ”, and who is not an
addict himself, will be found
by the sentencing court to be
a “ public menace ”. Such
a finding would be manda
tory on the part of the court
if the circumstances I sta
ted before were found to be
present.
Upon such a finding, the ac
cused would be sentenced to
an additional term of not less
than ten nor more than thrity

We heartily endorse all the

latest Ordinance, which pro
hibits jay walking. Brunswick
is a grand place, but not
large enough to have a jay
walking Ordinance.
