1972 VA Benefits To Georgia Vets
Over $540-Million
ATLANTA - Benefits re
ceived by Georgia veterans
and their dependents during
1972 amounted to more than
a half-billion dollars. Georgia
Veterans Service Director Pete
Wheeler said the more than
542-million dollars represents
a 16 per cent increase over
the 1971 total.
He said, “These benefits
and services from the Veterans
Administration were provided
veterans, their dependents and
survivors in recognition of the
veterans’ periods of service
to their country.”
The VA benefits came in
the form of compensation,
pensions, insurance, burial
allowances, educational pro
visions, automobile grants,
loans and medical services.
Wheeler said that many
people do not realize that the
effects of a war do not end
with the firing of the last
shot. He cited as an example
the fact that Georgia still is
paying monthly pensions to
21 widows of veterans of the
War Between the States.

“The effects of a war upon
its participants are long-last
ing — sometimes forever,” said
Wheeler, “and often worsen
ing as the participant grows
older.” Noting that there are
more than 20,000 World War
I veterans, whose average age
is about 76, living in Georgia,
Wheeler said, “The infirmities
of old age coupled with war
time disabilities make medical
care and hospitalization needs
more acute every day.”
He mentioned another
group of veterans being con
fronted more frequently now
by health problems. He said,
“Georgia has about a quarter
million World War II veterans
averaging about 50 years in
age, the point in life when
disabilities and age just natur
ally tend to increase the need
for services.”
Emphasizing the need for
improved facilities to care
for veterans, Wheeler said,
“Veterans are returning home
to Georgia at the rate of
approximately 2,000 every
month. And a greater percent-
with more chairs, plus they
had plenty of cake, sandwich,
es, coffee, and cold drinks
for all of the crowd. We en
joyed it very much.

this fact to the many advances
made in medical services and
technology, and the rapid re

modern hospital facilities.
He said recent figures indi
cate that Georgia has more
than 145,000 Vietnam Vet

BROWN SUGAR
Tired of taking down your
hammer and chisel when
you’re ready to use brown
sugar? Try adding a piece of
apple to the sugar and store it
in an airtight container, USDA
home economists advise. It’s a
good way to guarantee powder
instead of lumps.
CRACKED EGGS
Cracked or soiled eggs may
contain harmful bacteria.
University of Georgia Ex
tension home economists warn
that imperfect eggs should only
be used in thoroughly cooked
foods—baked goods or dishes
that cook on top of your range
for a long time.

TOUR
GEORGIA
ATLANTA (PRN) - Spring
in Georgia, creeping first into
the coastal plains with an
elusive touch, then an
explosion of color, is the
annual signal for statewide
tours of homes and gardens to
begin.
Way cross opens the
schedule with a tour set for
March 18. Seven stops are
featured here, including
houses of Colonial, French
and Mediterranean
architectural styles.
Savannah follows March
20-22—three days and nights
devoted to town and country
excursions and candlelight
tours, as well as seminars and
workshops planned by the
Historic Savannah Foundation
in association with the
National Trust for Historic
Preservation. Seminars and
workshops will focus on the
city’s restoration projects,
with field studies of selected
areas of renovation.
Prevalent in Savannah’s
restored structures are paint
colors from the new
“Savannah Spectrum”
promoted by the Historic
Savannah Foundation. The
soft yet vivid colors bear such
evocative names as
Tomochichi Red, She-Crab
Bisque, “Haint” Blue,
Chatham Gold, Tabby White
and Sorghum Bronze.

One of the thousands of

at Teen Challenge once told
Wilkerson that he wished his
parents had kept a closer
watch over him.
‘Td check how long a kid
stays in the bathroom,” he
said. “If he is there very long,
he might be taking drugs. I
used to do that.
“It s a good idea to look
for some of the signs of nar
cotics. It arms or hand
kerchiefs have any blood on
them, it might mean a kid has
been using the needle. Also,
when he gels high his eyes get
very red. especially from
marijuana, and his pupils get
very small.
“People can tell from

is high on maiijuana. he can't

gets into the habit of wearing
sunglasses all the time, its a
sign he might be using drugs.”

highlight seven houses as well
as the antebellum Jones Creek
Church. Os special interest is
the Colonial Quilting Bee set
for Sunday afternoon at the
Rye Patch Community House.
A number of women in the
rural community still practice
the ancient art of quilting at

March 30 and 31 feature
Washington’s white-columned
mansions, with six houses
included on the Friday
candlelight tour, and eight on
the Saturday daytime tour.
Included on the day schedule
is the Turner Bryson cabin,
one of the earliest in Wilkes

reconstructed on its present
site, the log cabin boasts
handmade furnishings typical
of early Georgia.
Home and garden tours will

PASTRY CRUSTS
Pastry crusts frozen before
baking are more tender and
flaky than those frozen after
baking. It’s a fact, according to
U. S. Department of Agricul
ture home economists. The
experts also suggest baking
with oil or using less fat to
reduce the crust’s calorie
count.
SHOWER CURTAINS
Forget the endless struggle
of cleaning your shower cur
tain. University of Georgia
Extension specialists suggest
an easier way—wash it in your
machine. Use warm water and
a gentle cycle. Add water
softner— not soap or detergent.
White plastic shower curtains
may be cleaned in your
machine too. To remove
mildew, use chlorine bleach
instead of water softner. Dry
on “air” or “fluff” setting.

MANAGING MONEY
To get the most out of your
money today, you must be as
skillful as a banker, advise
specialists at the Cooperative
Extension Service. You can
sharpen money managing skills
by polishing up on your grade
school math and making price
comparisons. Ask yourself how
many “necessities” are actually
luxuries. At the grocery, see if
in-season produce is cheaper.
And, remember, a pressure
sauce pan is the answer for
cooking less tender and—less
expensive—cuts of meat.
