The Brantley Enterprise, Na hunta, Ga., March 22, 1973
When it comes to conservation,
we plunge right in.
The Chattooga — 54 miles of wild river. Georgia
Power's land exchange agreement with the National
Forest Service means that 6,000 acres along that
thundering white water will remain untamed and
unspoiled. Preservation of such rivers is vital.
In 1972 we also donated 15 miles of land along
the Chattahoochee River for development into a
public park by Fulton and Cobb counties. An ad
ditional 150 acres were given to the State of Georgia
for a wilderness park and access to the river.
Beginning with Georgia Power’s land manage
ment programs back in the 20s, we’ve been working
to preserve and protect the environment. When it
comes to conservation, you won’t find us clinging
to the shoreline. We plunge right in.

NEWS FROM
Brantley County East
Hello friends...l mast ex.
press my regrets for the
•• mixed up " column last
week. Sure got the feed back
on that, but hope you can
understand that even News
Paper equipment needs tender
loving Repair at times..that’s
what happened. A piece of
machinery refused to oper
ate. Although my Editor is
a bit perturbed and offers
apologies, hope you enjoyed
the untangling of the repeat,
ed column.
Dropped in on A.C. and
Doris Harrison...A.C. is a
carpenter, electrician, Coll,
ege student and “ Jack of
all or most trades”...
he was at
tempting to repair their Auto
matic Washer while Doris
told me of her episode with
a Coral snake in their yard.
She has a thing about snakes
and crawlingcreatures..shou
ted loud and long for spo
use to come shoot the snake,
which their dog was nipping
and yapping at. Eventually,
A.C. arrived with gun in hand.,
holding the dog off with one
foot, shot and missed, got
the snake on second shot.
Cheers!.. dead snake, sleepy
husband, irate dog and shook,
up wife!
The Waynesville Comm
unity Service Club held their
meeting Wednesday 14 March
Mrs. Myrtle Moody was Hos
tess. A covered dish lunch,
eon was served and the mem
bers experimented in the mak
ing of Decorating hand mir
rors. Saw one..lots of net
frills, styrofoam balls and
little plastic flowers or rib
bons. Right cute and useful
as gifts. Correction: I prin
ted Mrs. Harris as Pres,
of this Club, it is Mrs. L. R.
Harrison.
Understand but have not got
ten it ” from the horses
mouth”, that Mr. Noody Gib
son was attempting to load
cattle in his truck..was given
a swift kick in the mouth!
Apparently one of the Bovin
es did not like the idea of
being pushed a round..don’t
know the extent of damage to
Mr. Gibson, other than a chip
ped tooth and a let down of
his pride. Hope it is not too
severe, Mr. Gibson.
Met up with a long lost
cousin..he didn’t recognize
this gal...but a few minutes
reminiscing of childhood
years..white sandy roads, We
iner Roasts, cake walks br
ought back nostalgic mem
ories. Wish our sons and
daughters had been able to
experience those happy ti
mes...even the experience of
getting there, in “ horse and
wagon ” conveyance!
Mr. Clovis Johnson is the
proud owner of a new Trac
tor ! We know he can oper
ate machinery..but do be
careful of those Wheel Bar
rows, Mr. Johnson! He says,
Mrs. J. is feeling much bet
ter these days and we’re hap
py to see her up and out
again after her long bout of
illness. Also, Mr. Johnson
reported that he did not read
his Brantley Enterprise right
away..he thought it was the
Florida Times, cause it was
so thick last week! That’s
progress, friends.
Last week I reported a new
addition to the Gary Sumler
Household...a new filly...her
name is Crystal...this week,
Mr. Tommy Sumler and Mrs
Violet Sumler are the proud
owners of another “ Cham
pion” offspring..another little
filly. Spouse made a special
trip to the stable this morn,
ing to announce to his Stal
lion Champ, that he had an
lion Champ, that he had an.
other offspring...says “ Ch
amp” replied that’s okay, I
knew it and figured it was
gonna be a girl!” I think I
better check out Spouse and
Horse...and figure out which
one is doing the nipping of
alcoholic beverage!
Mr. Collins says “ I have
never seen a single man’s
garment that zippers up the
back!” Referring to having
to zip Mrs. Collins clothing
for her...doesn’t understand
Women.
Speaking with an “ out of
State ” visitor the other eve
ning..from N.J., I asked him
how he was enjoying our So
uthern Hospitality. Readily ,
he replied “ Wonderful , and
especially those “ grapefruit
juice biscuits ” I had the
other morning!” I almost fa
inted.. as I’ve never...ever
heard of such. So. teasing him
a bit, I said, please try our
cornbread and possum ...deli
cious I Poor fellow agreed to
try it, ■ although he wasn’t
quite sure of possum..of co

it, I want to try them my

The USS Brunswick arrived
in port in Brunswick Thurs
day. Observed was many
happy Sailors “ living it
up”....believe this is the ship
that brought two of our POWs
Home to Florida from Viet,
nam.... Welcome Home and
Home is anywhere Stateside,
fellows!
From Hortense.. When the
Train tradgedy happened the
whole Community of Hortense
immediately came to the aid
and rescue of some 300 folks
who were rather dazed, fri.
ghtened and just wandering
about. Hortense Hospitality
proved itself again, caring
for these folks, feeding them
sandwiches and hot coffee,
inviting them to shelter and
providing cars and buses to
transport them to the Land
mark and Holiday Inn in Je
sup. We of Brantley County
feel a certain pride in this
action but the folks adminis
tered to responded in more
precise terms. Mrs. Daisy
Eunice says, “ more comm
ents were made..” we never
knew Georgia had so many
kind and considerate folks.,
but you have shown us and we
intend to let it be known
when ve reach our nomes
up North again.” .heir ap
preciation was as ueep and
genuine as the concern and
consideration the folks of Hor
tense gave.

Had a nice visit from Mrs.
Wright and her daughter Ju
lie Sikes. As with my first
meeting with these fine peo
ple, a sense of humor pre
vails. In our chatting coun-
Idn’t help but quote the fol
lowing... Seems their young
son has just begun driving
the family car. After night
services recently, the young
man forgot to return the car
keys..left with friends on his
return trip to Brunswick wh
ere the Rev. and his family
resides. Being the last to
leave the church, it suddenly
dawned on Rev. Wright, he
did not have his keys! Af
ter much discussion of “wh
at to do ”, Rev. Wright sug
gested to his wife that she
stay in the church, lock all
doors turn on all lights, and
play the piano loud and long.
This was for reasons of re
cent Vandalism at the Chur
ch. Mrs. Wright knowing wi
thout a doubt that the Lord
would watch over her..let her
final decision be to accom
pany her husband on his walk
to perhaps flag a kindheart
ed Motorist.they did..a mot
orist did stop and gave them
a lift to Thalmann where they
made the Telephone call to
their home.. Conclusion of
story is that the car reached
them forthwith...yet, laterbe
ing informed of our “ Bob
Cats”..Mrs. Wright thought
she had taken even greater
risk and does not consider
these creatures as being the
most Christian type!.
The Reverend Wright does
extend a. most cordial invi
tation to each and all to at
tend Worship at his Church.
On 23 March there will be
a camp ou for Jr. Boys at
the Church and a Pajama
Party for Jr. Girls at Rev.
Wright’s Home the same ni
ght. Everyone is invited to
attend the Cook-out... Work •
day, 24 Match at the Church.
No News is Good News
I guess...we still do not have
reports from Browntown Ch
urch or any social items.
Would appreciate it anytime
though.
It is a bit of sadness that
I mention a conversation with
a very nice gentleman, Mr.
Archie Lyons, who recently
lost his wife. Words are so
inadequate in times of sor
row and comforting. I can only
give my heart, my hands and
my understanding to him. Mr.
Lyons, as some of us have
and all of us will, is suff.
ering in his lonliness and loss
of a loved one. I can only
say that the heart must know
pain and sorrow as well as
happiness and love..or wewo
uld not know the difference.
Waynesville Baptist Church:
From Pastor Sheppard: We
encourage visits and services
in the Nursing Homes. Th
ese elderly people are so ap
preciative and the Ho! -
combs sang in Brunswick re
cently, receiving a blessing.
We need prayers for our sick,
especially, Mrs. Ollie V.
Whitner and Mr. and Mrs.
Mercer. Pray also for the
two Rhoden boys who were in
a wreck last weekend. Lamar
is seriously injured and in
Intensive Care in Waycross.
Larry is better and at home.
Pastors Remarks: I was real
disappointed our youth did
not attend the Youth Rally
at Crawford St. Baptist Ch
urch, Monday. We attended.
It was of value to Church
Leaders and all young peo
ple. I appreciate all of you
people and your contribution
to Missions which was sl,
182.00. That is truly a mis
sionary minded Church. Th
ank you so much for your
gifts for the glory of God.
Brother Sheppard.
Congratulations to Mr. and
Mrs. Parson, Dorothy Gib
son’s parents, on their an
niversary this week.
A surprise birthday dinner
was given for Tommy Mood
y’s Mother, age 67 at his home
many friends and family were
present. Happy Birthday from
me, too.
He who does not understand
your silence will probably
not understand your words.
From the “ Brantley Co
unty Country Club”: Good
and faithful friemds, Mr. and
Mrs. Bobby Sheppard really
did not have a good week
end, 9-10 March, but I must
say they have stamina and will
not allow things to get them
down too long. These fine folks
have many friends and reg
ular customers who not only
keep going to the Country
Club for it’s Courtesy and
friendly atmosphere, but who
stand staunchly beside them
when the need arises..and al-

Thalmann news
Church chimes from Tbe
Glynn Baptist Church:
There was a Baptismal Ser

3:30 p.m. Sunday. Among
those participants were Mrs.
Landon, Two Rany Children
from Thalmann.
The Youth Activity meeting
is held every Friday night
at 7:30 p.m.
Glynn Baptist has a Church
Bus that make a route down
the Post Road to the Nor

Waynesville Road by “ the
old Drury Place” returning
by Mr. Clinton Popwells store
to Thalmann, every Sunday
morning. All who do not have
transportation are encour
aged to come to Church by
means of Glynn Baptist Bus.
McLean wishes to state that
Soft Ball season is now here
and anyone wishing to par
ticipate usually at the Tahl

field, to please contact either
himself or Mr. Bill Skipper
at Thalmann. I could tell by
the gleam in Mr. Mac’s eyes
he can hardly wait!
Just before the paper went
to press last week, Mr. Hern
don’s grandfather, who was
so ill in Lyons, passed away.
Our heartfelt sympathy to you
and your family.
Chatting with friends and
relatives: Visited Mrs. Bl
anche ( Highsmith ) Harrison,
last week and what a delight
ful visit. Blanche is one of
Thalmann’s long time Resi

to the late Connie Harrison.

Heritage and learned to my
surprise there was a small
School House there that was
also used for church on Sun
days, many years ago. She
was one of the School’s Tea
chers for awhile...teaching
“ Primer through Bth gra

imately 30 children attend,
ing and one young man she
Ivene Langley
recalls vividly, Mr. Herman
Taylor... " the class agi

nearly everyday., says he
must remember her, t 00...
everytime he sees her In
Brunswick, it’s “ Hello Tea
cher!” Mrs. Harrison’s Ne
phew and family live with her
and I chatted with his lovely
wife, Thelma. Wonder where
my cousins find these beau
tiful wives...but it was such a
pleasure to visit with them.
Then there’s the “ Teller
of Tales”... a very nice gen
tieman, Mr. Mac, as we call
him. .. Mr. McLean...owner of
the local Grocery and also
the Hub of News. .. Stopped to
check with him on news !
(gullible me should know bet.
ter)... I was immediately in
formed I’d just missed the
news! Excited, I said What?
He replied, well, wife Ella
and Loraine had to go to the
Hospital.. l was really sympa
thetic by then..he continued..
“ we were playing the Banjo
and guitar and singing Cotton
Eyed Joe..they thought it was
a Funeral Hymn., cried so
much..lost so much liquid,
had to takem for Glucose!”
...Now folks, you see where
some of my humorous stuff
comes from! Os course this
is Mr. Mac’s usual self and
most folks find it a pleas
ure to chat a mem ent or hours
with him.. for the laughter and
humor. He is also a “ Fa
ther, Brother and Participant
with the young boys around.,
listens to their troubles, takes
them fishing, hunting camp
outs and Plays Ball. The yo.
ung people love it, parents
appreciate it and we believe
God smiles upon him. Al
though, Mr. Mac always says
“ he’s not feeling well at
all ”... I know better... yo
ung at heart makes you young
in body and soul.
A big Fishfry was held at
