The rose gardens of beautiful Boxhall Plantation are visited on
Thomasville’s daily Plantation Tour. (PRN)
TOUR
GEORGIA
THOMASVILLE (PRN) -A
number of the state’s finest
plantations are now open to
visitors in south Georgia’s City
of Roses. Embarking from the
Chamber of Commerce, a bus
traces a daily two-hour tour of
local landmarks and the
historic plantations for which
Thomasville is famous.
Houses on the bus tour
include:
—Greenwood Plantation,
built in 1820. An immense
magnolia rosette is focal point
of the facade, with wreaths of
laurel leaves capping each
column. Medora Perkerson’s
WHITE COLUMNS IN
GEORGIA names Greenwood
“one of the finest in the
South.” A stretch of
magnolia-bordered avenue
sweeps from the high iron
entrance gate to the gat dens
and the white columned
mansion. Visitors may walk
through the gardens here.
-Lapham Patterson House,
an intriguing example of
Victoriana, built in 1881 and
presently being developed by
the Georgia Historical
Commission as a Victorian
house museum.
—Boxhall Plantation, where
visitors may explore rose
Drying, Storage Facilities
Pay Otf Big on 'Beans, Grain
ATHENS—“Farmers who
installed drying and storage
equipment for last year’s
soybean crop doubled the
value of that corp—and paid
for the equipment several times
over in the first year. And they
will have use of the facilities 15
years or longer in the future.”
W. Cecil Hammond, agricul
tural engineer with the Univer
sity of Georgia Extension
Service, made that statement
this week in reminding growers
that now is the time to begin
planning and constructing
drying and storage facilities for
this year’s soybeans and grain.
Hammond pointed out that
best results are obtained by
planning ahead and following a
plan prepared by an exper
ienced licensed engineer. The
gardens and landscaped
grounds. Terrace bricks were
handmade on the plantation.
-- - Millpond Plantation,
uncommon in this section due
to its Spanish architecture,
complete with inner court.
I’he house was built about
1905.
Landmarks on the tour:
Thomasville’s noted “Big
Oak,” 286 years old, 155-foot
limb spread, 22 feet in
circumference.
-Fanners’ Market, said to
be the largest mixed vegetable
market in the state with a
volume of 20,000 bushels a
day. Produce is sold at auction
daily beginning at 2 p.in., and
enticing arrays of fresh fruit
and vegetables are available for
retail purchase.
Thomasville’s Plantation
lours are scheduled Monday
through Saturday. For further
information, write Chamber of
Commerce, Box 560,
Thomasville, Georgia 31792.

plan should suit individual
needs, he stated.
The engineer emphasized
that the net gain from drying
and storage equipment usually
isn’t as great as it was this year.
He added, however, that the
price increase after storage
averages high enough over the
price at harvesttime to justify
drying and storage cost.
The convenience of having a
place to unload the grain,
without having to wait at the
elevator and force the combine
to sit idle in the field, should
also be considered, according
to Hammond.
He said growers who need
assistance in planning these
facilities can obtain further
information by contacting
their county Extension
office.
