The sight of Santa in a boat being rowed by elves proved to be a most unusual and frequently photographed sight. INTERSTATE Sprinkle Bells... Rain Forces Santa to Trade Sleigh for Boat By ANDY KOBER Where there’s a will, there’s a way. During Santa’s Christmas Eve visit in Pine Mountain, firefighters had to park Santa’s sleigh and take him around town in a boat. Torrential rains had already dropped five to seven inches of rain with more falling as time for Santa’s early visit approached. For 18 years, Pine Mountain firefighters had taken Santa around Pine Mountain for a late visit with firefighters distributing candy canes to children and adults, but the annual event was in jeopardy. Firefighters were working on covering and protecting components of Santa’s sleigh from the rain when Pine Mountain Police Officer Clarke Roberts suggested taking Santa around in the department’s boat. Not actually in service yet, the boat was obtained for the recovery of drowning victims and had just been painted by Castleberry Collision. With a generator and two spotlights high lighting the jolly old elf, Christmas gifts in waterproof tubs, and two elves named Celeste and Olivia paddling, Santa was still able to make the early visit around Pine Mountain, with firefighters delivering the annual treats. Periods of hard rain limited visibility and Santa could not go down deadend streets. In addition, the approach of lighting resulted in Santa having to hurry along. However, the sight of Santa in a boat had people following in their cars, and stopping along the roadways to take photos. Though wet, Santa completed his early visit in Pine Mountain and left to make his marathon journey later in the evening. ‘Casino Night Bets for Pets’ Jan. 23 By ANDY KOBER As Clint Eastwood said: Are you feeling lucky? The Humane Society of Harris County has scheduled an inaugural “Casino Night: Bets for Pets” on Saturday, Jan. 23. Casino Night will be held 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. at The Lodge and Spa at Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain. The entry fee is only $40 per person or two for $75, and each entrant receives $250 in chips at the door. Casino Night is set to include a Silent Auction, prizes and appetizers. A cash bar will be open.
