Figures just released by the Georgia Department of Labor show the area’s jobless rate improved in November. Harris, Meriwether, Talbot and Troup counties all improved in their jobless rate, according to the labor department. As a region, the four-coun ty area had a 5.7% average rate in November, down from a revised 6.1% during October. The area is also better off than year ago, when the four- county area had an average unemployment rate of 6.8%. The four-county area’s 5.7% November rate lags just slightly behind the statewide average of 5.6% but further behind the national average of 5.0%. The state average was 6.7% a year ago. The national jobless rate was 5.8% in November of 2014. •Harris County record ed a 4.5% jobless rate in November. Harris was tied for the 16th best rate of Georgia’s 159 counties. The rate for Harris was 4.9% in October. In November of 2014, Harris had a 5.5% rate. A year ago Meriwether’s rate was 8.4% .•Talbot County, with the smallest population of the four, had a 6.6% jobless rate for November. The month before it was 6.9%. A year ago, Talbot County also had an 6.0% fig ure. •Troup County, with the largest population and work force, had a 5.0% jobless rate in November, improved from 5.4% in October. In November of 2014, Troup showed an 6.5% jobless rate. •Oconee County near Athens once again had the best rate in the state, at 3.7%. •The Worst Place in the State title went to Hancock County in southeast Georgia, at 10.%. New Year Starts Off With Meteor Shower By ANDY KOBER Jan. 1 brings with it the Quadrantids Meteor Shower. Meteors from the shower could start being seen on Friday, Jan. 1 and the shower is predicted to last until Tuesday, Jan. 5. Peak meteor activity is expected during the overnight hours of Sunday to Monday, Jan. 3-4. At peak activity, the Quadrantids Meteor Shower could produce up to 40 meteors per hour. The meteor shower comes from particles of dust left behind by an extinct comet known as 2003 EH1. Light from the second quarter moon could block out all but the brightest meteors. Still, it is worth going outside to see as there will not be another meteor show er until April. As always, to view celes tial events, get away from bright outdoor lights. Kendrick G. Billy Sanford Colquitt, Sr. Aug. 11, 1924 - Dec. 24, 2015 WW II Navy Veteran Billy S. Colquitt, Sr., 91, of Warm Springs, GA passed away Thursday, December 24, 2015 at his home. Funeral services were held at 3:00 PM on Sunday, December 27, 2015 at Abundant Life Worship Center in Manchester with Rev. Sanford Colquitt officiating, assisted by Rev. Dan Rogers and Rev. Rick Lipp. Interment followed at Meriwether Memory Gardens with Mr. Colquitt’s grandsons and great- grandsons serving as pallbearers. Visitation was held Saturday evening from 5:00-7:00 PM at the funeral home. Mr. Colquitt was born August 11, 1924 in LaGrange, GA the son of Ruby Storey Colquitt and Lee Colquitt. He was a veteran of the United States Navy serving during World War II. After his military career he worked for Security Life Insurance Company where he was promoted to a manage ment position and later worked for National Security Life Insurance Company. He founded and organized the Pine Mountain Valley Church of God in 1956 where he served as pastor for 25 years. He then served as pastor of Hogansville Assembly of God for 6 years. Mr. Colquitt served as an Evangelist and missionary having traveled over 60 times to Mexico providing food and clothes and building numerous churches. Mr. Colquitt was an ordained Bishop in the Church of God and was a member of River of Life Church of God in Hamilton. He was also an active supporter of Abundant Life Worship Center in Manchester. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Lucile Bond and Elsie Oliver; grandson, Joey Colquitt; and son-in-law, Joe Hanna. Survivors include his wife Janette Swann Colquitt of Warm Springs; son, Rev. Billy Sanford Colquitt, Jr. and his wife Mildred of Manchester; daughters, Sandra Hanna of Warm Springs and Dr. Susan Andrews and her husband Gilbert of.Ellerslie; and five grandchildren and seven great- grandchildren.
