They may be allowed to view some land or other thing of promise but they can never reach it, for they do not deserve any favor. Hon. Thos. E Watson has of late been delivering addresses promistously over the State on political issues. He steadfastly adheres to the Ocala platform. Some agree with him: but, at the same time, there are many others who arc of a decidedly different opinion. Up to date tax digests have been received by the Comptroller General irom several counties of t.he StatJ. All show a considera¬ ble increase in valuation of prop¬ erty leturned for taxation. The Sparta Iskarmalite favors a law for the State requiring that criminals be executed in private, and prohibiting the publication so much in newspapers about cir¬ cumstances attending crimes and executions. To this the Herald subscribes and endorses the senti¬ ment expressed. “The government cannot be both merchant and banker for the peo¬ ple. It can only protect them with wholesome laws. It can only shield them from overtaxation and tyran- ry. But it can never go into part¬ nership with them or become gener¬ al mortgagee of land, tenements, heriditaments, pumpkins acd jack¬ asses.”—Ex Governor R. L. Tay¬ lor, of Tennessee. The people support the roads, and i? is nothing but right that the ests of the people should be recognized and more especially -when the organic 1a*v provides The tax returns for the county show for this year an increase in val¬ uation of taxable property to the amount of $87,500, tbe aggregate now being $969,200 against $871,700 for the year 1890. In 1-858, taxable property was re¬ turned to the amount in worth of $1, 535,979. These figures speak for themselves. HICKORY GROVE The health of our neighborhood was never better. Lee Dickey, of Ceres, was up on a visit to his parents and friends, yesterday. Mr. John R, Dickey carried his best girl out to Mt Carmell yes¬ terday. Jim don’t often haul the girls about in his new buggy, but when he does he means business. Willie Johnson carried one of his sweetheart s out tochurch Sunday. I won't say who it was.
