FACTS FOR THE SICK \ A Letter from an Eminent Di¬ vine in Regard to the Best Medicine in the World. Read. Woruierful Cure®. Atlanta, Ga., January 2, 1890. Six months ago, at the request of a friend who was interested in the sale of King's Royal Germetuer, I made a writ¬ ten statement of the benefits I had re¬ ceived from the use of that medicine. Garrkt. Supt. Taking Cold. What do we mean when we say w< have taken cold? In a literal sense, wt have done no sueh thing; and a moderr writer has suggested that what is called “catching cold” would be better ex¬ pressed by the phrase, catching heat. What actually takes place is something as follows: We expose some part of tht body to a draft; the surface becomes chilled, and the circulation, to some ex¬ tent, is arrested; the blood and*othei fluids are sent in another direction. What should have been thrown out through the surface is turned in on the mucous membranes, and a9 these parts become congested, sneezing takes place; there is an abnormal quantity of fluids thrown upon the mucous surfaces, and the system makes an effort to get rid of it. This “taking cold” may be caused by sitting for a few moments in a strong current of cool air; it may be the back of the neck that is exposed; or it might be some other part of the body. Hold¬ ing the hands in very time cold water for a considerable length will often cause one to take cold. Or sitting with cold feet will do the same thing, especially if the general circulation is feeble. Cloth¬ ing one part of the body too much, and another part too little, will frequently give one a cold. Anything that sends arrests the free circulation of blood and it in on the mucous surface may produce this effect.
