Issue 1 Covering Byron & Peach County email: byronbuzz@pstel.net Thursday, January 3,12013 The Rotary Club of Byron was busy as Santa’s Elves during the month of December as they collected toys for the Toys for Tots Program (above) and also pre sented Kay Center Director Todd Youngblood with a check for more toys (left). They also purchased and put together fruit boxes for needy families which were distributed through Byron United Methodist Church (top photo). The Club participates in various community projects through out the year. The club meets at 8 a.m. on Wednesdays at the Masonic Lodge in Byron. MCCG Nurses Chosen Nurse Of The Year MACON, GA - Two nurses from The Medical Center of Central Georgia (MCCG) have been named Nurse of the Year by The March of Dimes. The March Of Dimes Georgia Chapter recognized James Carey, RN, RNC-NNICU, ASN of MCCG’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, and Vickey Vaughn, MSN, FNP- C, RNC of MCCG’s Labor & Delivery/ Women’s Services Unit at the Third An nual Nurse of the Year Awards on Satur day, November 17 in Atlanta. The Nurse of the Year ceremony is a statewide event that recognizes excep tional nurses, crates awareness of pro fessional excellence and promotes the future of the nursing profession. Nurses from across the state and various spe cialties were recognized for their efforts to provide comfort, care and support to patients in their communities. Sixteen winners who have demonstrated excel lence in patient care were announced at the awards dinner. “Nurses from across the state of Georgia were recognized in 16 special ties. MCCG is honored that our nurses were recognized in two of these catego ries. James and Vickey provide excel lent patient care on a daily basis, and are well-deserving of this honor,” said Judy Pauli, Chief Nursing Officer for MCCG. The March of Dimes accepted nomi nations for the awards from June 1 to August 1 of this year. More than 750 nominations were submitted from across the state, and from those, over 350 fi nalists emerged. A volunteer commit tee conducted a peer review of blinded applications and chose the winners for each category. Nurses were nominated in categories ranging from critical care to women’s health More than 700 people attended the event, raising over $175,000 for The March of Dimes, making the Georgia Nurse of the Year Awards the largest and most successful in the country. Goodbye 2012 Brief Year In Review It is always good to take stock of the previous year as you begin a new year. Be low is a brief look at the year 2012 in review from Byron/ Peach County. In January: • Byron named Derrick Hayes as City Administrator. • Byron CVB/BBHT/DA rejected the annual agree ment with the city because it was $9,000 short of previous year’s budget as there was confusion as to who would handle rental of the confer ence center and other facili ties. • Byron Middle School made AYP for the third year in a row. February: • Though the SPLOST did not end for another three years, voters were informed they would vote on whether to extend it in March because of a Transportation SPLOST which would be on the July ballot. • The Battle of Byron moved its location to North Peach Park to have more room. • The Board of Education put returning to a five day week up for discussion. • Byron Mayor Larry Col lins broke a tie on whether to put bids out for purchase of a new fire truck. • Alexis Gabrielle McGhee was chosen as Miss Peach County 2012. • Byron City Council ap proved sending a resolution to Peach County asking that Byron be an early voting site. • Game On Trainig opened in Byron. March: •BBHT Manager Regina Mansfield tendered her resig nation to take a job with the City of Gainesville. • City Council approved the revised agreement with CVB/BBHT/DA. • Peach County Board of Education voted to go back to a five-day school week. • Four committees were announced for Byron Bet ter Hometown and the com munity urged to join one of them. • Barbara Ray and fam ily celebrated the Williams- Slocumb home’s centennial anniversary. • Peach Regional Medical Center finally broke ground for the new facility to be lo cated on Hyw. 247 connec tor. April: •O’Reilly Auto Parts opened on Hwy. 49. • Byron City Council ap proved an increase in trash pick up rates. • The Battle of Byron Wom anless Pageant was quite a success as was the Byron Li ons Club Pancake Breakfast. • P.A.L.M.S. Medical Transport held a ribbon cut ting and dedication ceremo ny. • Eight sign up to vye for title of Little Mr./Miss for Battle of Byron. May: •Robert Stump retired from the Recreation Department as director. • A town hall meeting was held to discuss the request for a Historic Marker to com memorate the Byron Pop Festival of 1970. • Tiffany Peavy was hired as the new Manager of Byron Better Hometown. • A National Day of Prayer ceremony was held in Byron. • 160 compete in the Battle of Byron Road Race. • Annual Racers Reunion held at Middle Georgia Race way. June: •A drive-by shooting inves tigated on Beeland Drive. • Annual Peach Festival BAHS Kickoff Luncheon goes to ’’The Bottom.” • The Board of Education delayed the start for the first day of school due to exten sive heating and air condi tioning projects which would not be completed on time. • Rusty Adams presented a $5,000 check from Lowe’s to help finish the remodel ing project at the fire depart ment. • Barbara G. Ray receives Scouting’s Golden Eagle Award. July: •Martin Moseley was sworn in as the Byron Rotary Club President. • Firechief J. D. Mosby and Lt. Josh Riley were recog nized by council for continu ing education accomplish ments. • Terminated fireman, Rusty Adams, approached council because he wants answers as to why he was terminated as a part-time and volunteer fireman. • An old-fashioned ice cream social was held in Jail- house Park. • Boys and Girls Clubs hav ing a hard time financially. Director Karen Deese How ell resigns. •Byron and Peach County in negotiations over distribu tion of LOST monies. • Byron Better Hometown Manager, Tiffany Peavy, ap proached city council to ask that BBHT be given use of Byron’s old City Hall build ing across from the cem etery.
