PAGE 4 THE BYRON BUZZ SECTION of The GEORGIA POST Thursday, January 17,2013 On Suffering Persecution “Yes, and all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution”; was written from prison by Paul to Timothy in 2 Tim. 3:12. Paul said that he had suffered more than any of the other apostles, and we may safely conclude that he had suffered more than any other person of his time. Yet in spite of all his suffering, he could say that the sufferings of “this pres ent time” are not worthy to be compared with the glory that will be revealed to us in the life to come (Romans 8:18). Those who are determined to live godly, who have set their minds to do so, have counted the cost and have determined to deny themselves ungodli ness and worldly lusts, and to live soberly, righteously and godly in this present world (Titus 2:12). They will suffer persecu tion! Just what is persecu tion? Webster [New Col legiate Dictionary 1975] Subscribe Today & Keep Up With Your Community defines persecution as, “1: the act or practice of perse cuting, especially those who differ in origin, religion, or social outlook; 2: the con dition of being persecuted, harassed, or annoyed.” And he defines persecute as, “1: to harass in a manner designed to injure, grieve, or afflict; specifically to cause to suffer because of belief; 2: to an noy with persistent or urgent approaches (as attacks, pleas, or importunities); pester.” Je sus pronounced a blessing for righteousness sake in Mat thew 5:10, “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righ teousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” In 1 Peter 2:20 Peter said, “For what credit is it if, when you are beaten for your faults, you take it patiently? But when you do good and suffer, if you take it patiently, this is commendable before God.” Many times faithful, un compromising preaching of the gospel brings persecution, but blessed is the preacher who accepts it without re viling or treachery. If all of God’s people today would be as active as the apostles in carrying the gospel to others, would there not be as much persecution today as there was in their day, though in different forms? Disciples of Christ have a charge to keep: “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teach ing them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age. Amen.” The people of God will en dure persecution as a result of teaching the gospel and righteous living. It is amaz ing how many times the Bi ble emphasizes that fact. A few are: Matt. 10:22, “And you will be hated by all for my name’s sake. But he who endures to the end will be saved.”; John 15:18, “If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me before it hated you.”; 1 Thess. 3:4-5, “For, in fact, we told you before that when we were with you that we would suffer tribulation, just as it happened, and you know. For this reason, when I could no longer endure it, I sent to know your faith, lest by some means the tempter had tempted you, and our la bor might be in vain.”; and 1 Peter 4:16, “Yet if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in this matter.” able say About.. James Earnhardt Evangelist Church of Christ Even so, Jesus gave us as surance through his promis es, “...and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Not only that He will always be with us, but that if we remain faithful to Him, even unto death, that a crown of righteousness is laid up for us in heaven! What greater reward can we seek than a home in heaven FOREVER with God the Father, His Son and The Holy Spirit!! Let us put aside our fears and con cerns for the persecutions we suffer here and keep our mind, heart and emphasis on that ultimate goal of HEAV EN! It has now been 11 years since we entered their arena to quell the terror ist actions of A1 Qaida-and complications of the Taliban! While we lay claim to the an nihilation of Osama bin Ladin, it is pretty much debatable, as to exact accomplishments in that region! Most global scholars readily agree that any government, war, or balance of powers in Asia Pacific; is substantially unpredictable- but please remember that we have been laboring (and fight ing) under those conditions for more than a century; i.e. China, Japan, Korea, Vietnam- -and more. Reasonable earthlings all rejoice after a skirmish has diminished-with wounded (and worn) warriors heading home to be with families; but celebration often reigns pre maturely. After spending a career with the U.S. Navy, and sub sequently becoming a resident of three Oriental countries, observations of both citizens and leaders of ’’third world” entities, have overwhelmingly proven to me, that ”high brow political excursions” (in any direction), is worth about one handful of moist ’’night soil”- —and that decisions predicated on ’’delirious dollars” and wishful thinking, adds little to status quo. The Russians battled the disjointed tribal factions of ’’opium orchards” for years—leaving essentially defeated, as the vacuum of si lent weapons gave way to the return of renegades claiming former stomping grounds! Ob viously, we have made some headway over the years, both militarily, and in the social Theg|Factor Daniel W. Gatlyn, USN Ret., Minister/ Journalist sector—but the prediction of a re-gathering of unscrupulous ’’voices and vagrants”; is not off the wall! At the risk of ’’sounding the alarm” redundantly, please allow my mention of some vi tal perception. The first is just a reminder, that the throngs on the backside of the world- -who’s per capita income is only a fraction of America— will change allegiance at the ’’drop of a biscuit”! I have some very close friends in ’’third world”—but what I speak is a way of life- —from the barrio to the ball room! Secondly, these truths are not ordinarily a reason for concern with the United Na tions, or scholars of the diplo matic world. Unless you have spent extended periods in the trenches, and listened to the indiscreet proliferations of native leadership during ’’af ter hours”—you are prone to buy in to any scenario which makes for ’’good press”. Nothing would make me happier, than for our Forces to exit Afghanistan in a Victory March!! I’d like to believe that the lives which have been lost, really made a difference-but I wonder! And I would predict a return of A1 Qaida, and the Taliban after we’re gone! m ivS!/ 1-877-68CRIME Crimestoppers is a program designed to solve crimes with the help of concerned citizens.
