Unfair CC Property Taxes Editor, The Georgia Post: If you have a small house, you MUST pay HIGHER taxes than your neighbor who has a LARGER house. That is exactly what the Tax Asses sors and Planning and Zoning told me in a meeting and in an email. I appealed and asked, ’’What is the reason behind the illogi cal and immoral practice of making us pay higher taxes for a smaller house?” I received 2 answers. 1. ”A smaller kitchen is more expensive to build than a larger kitchen.” 2. ”A small box of cereal cost more per ounce than a large box.” Yes, it is true, in principal, that on average, a larger kitch en, while costing more in parts and labor to build, may cost less if materials are bought in bulk. And, a large box of ce real is cheaper per ounce than a smaller one. BUT, when you pay for the kitchen of any size to build and for any size cereal, the TAX RATE is always the SAME, no matter what quantity or size. But, not according to our tax asses sors. You not only possibly pay more, in principal, for a smaller house, but you have to pay higher taxes forever and ever, so that eventually you will be paying thousands MORE for your small house than your neighbor whose house is twice as big or larger and who pays LESS tax than you, forever and ever. I found out about 3 years ago that my house, built in 1979, and is 1,100 sq. ft. is currently charged nearly 10 dollars a sq. ft. more than my neighbor whose house, built also in 1979, is nearly twice as large. When I appealed, I was mocked and ridiculed, so I suspect that if you appeal, you will face the same fate. I, instead, thanked them all and shook their hands. Today, the talk is about the rich paying their fair share, but in Crawford County, the tax assessors rob from the poor and give to the rich by their unfair and immoral practice of unevenly taxing higher rates for smaller house and lower rates for larger houses. You may want to check your tax rate with your neigh bors. The practice is county wide. And, you can appeal at any time of the year, under a recent state law. Charles Sanferrare What About Clergy Rights? Editor, The Georgia Post: When the president signed the $633 billion defense bill, he criticized that por tion of it which protected the conscience rights of mili tary chaplains. It exempted chaplains from performing ceremonies - such as same- sex marriages - that they oppose based on their faith. Obama said the provision was ’’unnecessary and ill-advised” and that his administration remains committed to ’’pro tecting the rights of gay and lesbian service members”. What about the rights of Fitness Vs. Influenza Our immune system works 24-7-365 and knows exactly what’s wrong with us and what it needs to repair it with, “whether its better food to work with, more water, more rest, less stress, or more exercise.” The immune system gets stronger first by getting de pressed. Sorta like muscle fibers that have been bro ken down after a really hard workout. Our body uses this signal to build the muscle back stronger, “so as to pre pare it to handle the physical stress that we have told it that it can start expecting from the workout.” If we work out too hard when we first start exercising or when our body is not fully recovered from the previous exercise routine “we increase the risk of injury and if the injury is bad enough it can put us out of commission for a while.” Strengthening our immune system works much the same way, in how that it strength ens itself through “fitness routines from environmental exposures”. In other words, “if we live in a sterilized bubble for long enough, our immune system will waste away also, since it never gets exercised.” Most of us have at one time or the other, ate and ex ercised to get in a certain con dition, whether it was taking in more protein to build mus cle, or dropping sugar and starch intake to drop body fat levels. Building our im mune system works in much the same way, “healthy bal anced diet, exercise, plenty of rest and let’s not forget, -exposure on a consistent basis to your environment strengthens our immune sys tem naturally.” And just like over doing it when exercis ing, “we can also over do it when exposing ourselves to our surrounding environment when we know we are feel ing run down.” Here are some things we can do to strengthen and keep our immune system strong: #1 Deep rest and plenty of it, “this is when our body re pairs itself’ #2 Drink plenty of water. Try to drink at least 12-16 oz upon waking, “this will help your body eliminate things it wants to get out of you.” Lemon squeezed into warm water in the morning is a good immune booster “plus many other benefits”! #3 Plenty of antioxidant and mineral rich vegetables, fruits, nuts & berries “this helps the several trillion cells in our body have a better de fense system”. If you do not get enough of these, use vi tamins & minerals (backed with scientific research and not hype) to supplement your diet. Remember, food in bal ance is your best source of nutrients. #4 Try to prevent breath ing sudden blasts of cold air, when leaving a tempera ture controlled environment, “a simple dust mask works well.” #5 Stay active and exer cise, but if you feel run down, “layoff or at least do not exer cise strenuously”- your body does not need to be fighting the flu and trying to recover from a workout. members of the clergy? They should not be prevented from practicing their faith and adhering to the tenets of their religion. Although the presi dent hasn’t violated the first amendment’s guarantee that ’’Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof,” he did call into question the spirit and intent of the law which he has sworn to uphold. Robert L. Lehane Arm Our Teachers Editor, The Georgia Post: Hooray for the John Birch Society and the National Rifle Association (NRA) for demanding that our school teachers be armed to protect our children by using their U.S. Constitutional gun rights and armed guards. If the teachers had been routinely armed in the past decades, it’s obvious that the killings and the casualties would have been reduced by at least 90%. However, our leaders and the police wouldn’t allow our teachers to be armed and by doing so they have directly violated our Constitution that they have sworn to uphold and facilitated the horrible death and destruction. They should be investigated and prosecuted for such acts against our children. We should support the John Birch Society and the NRA in their efforts to arm our teachers and protect our children, and if the teachers bring their own guns, it will cost nothing. Ed Nemecheck Your Health by Wade Yoder Master Trainer & Fitness Nutrition Specialist #6 When you or the ones you care about are going to be around crowds of people or an environment that may increase your risk, be sure to keep it as healthy as you can leading up to the exposure. #7 Avoid stress and if you do get stressed, “find some thing you enjoy doing to de stress, such as active sports, reading, a funny movie, med itation etc.” #8 Think healthy thoughts about yourself and your health, “it can have some pretty cool and positive ben efits when your brain/control center of your body is kept positive! We’ve got a powerful system within us that is con stantly sending alert signals and gathering defenses to kill foreign invaders as they en ter our body, but if we do not give it the (simple healthy basics) to build the weaponry it needs, it will lose its battles and when our immune sys tem is not working properly, “we begin to lose quality of life and capability to fight ill ness and disease.” “Our immune system takes our health more seri ous then anyone else on this planet, “are we willing to give it the tools it needs to keep us well?” Different Stuff Knocking Around My Nogging I’m not completely certain that I’ve recovered from Christmas and entering the New Year. Nope. Make that I’m certain I’m not fully re covered. There have been a bunch of things I’ve wanted to share with you and hadn’t yet put into any order. The best I could do was make a list and put that list together. So here goes... • There was an article in Sunday’s Telegraph that made me so jealous I saw stars. No doubt about my re action being over the top; but I really couldn’t help it. Natal Margulis of Fresno, Califor nia has a library that houses 10,000 books. Let’s repeat that number lest you think it a typo—she has 10,000 books. A have a very exten sive library, but it in no way approaches that many trea sures. Ms. Margulis’ home has a 40’ wall that is lined top to bottom with custom-built book shelves. I’ve always wanted the same thing and one of those nifty sliding lad ders. There are two things about this that make me feel better. One, I’m looking forward to my own custom- book shelves when the Lord decides it’s time that James and I will have a home of our own; and two, the article mentions that books are more readily available at bargain prices on the heels of the electronic media onslaught. • I haven’t been able to sit through a single viewing of the television show “Under cover Boss” without shed ding tears. After the first couple of times I took up a challenge to get through an episode without happy-cry ing and blowing my nose. Thus far, the show is win ning. I really enjoy the show because it is a reaffirmation that America remains com prised of hard-working peo ple who keep their agreement with employers by earning their pay and caring about doing a good job. • If you haven’t aheady seen it, please go to YouTube or Google the commercial where a man is indignant be cause the restaurant in which he’s dining declines to honor the Monopoly money ten dered to pay his tab. I laughed so hard I had a cramp the first time I saw that commercial and have chuckled hardily each time I’ve subsequently seen it. I suspect the people at the Georgia Lottery may not realize the commercial is so funny viewers may not remember what’s being ad vertised. • I’ve always felt that the greatness of the United States of America is due in part to the diversity of her people. Former President Jimmy Carter recently wel comed a group of people rep resentative of that diversity. He said something that really hit home and has changed the way I think. President Carter said, paraphrasing here, that calling the people of America a melting pot is a misnomer. The diversity that is America is more correctly described as a mosaic. I love it. It is indeed a much better metaphor. • Can someone please ex plain the strategic advantage my puppy, Stitch, derives from the behind in the air, forepaws death-gripping the object on the floor position when gnawing on her toys? I can see that she’s enjoy ing herself immensely, I just wondered if there was any other reason for the comedic posing. Of This & That Trenesia Y. Stubbs Columnist email:trenesia@pstel.net • Sometimes the political cartoons make me very sad precisely because they hit their mark. • James and I very much enjoy a nostalgic television channel that plays series from our youth, especially the westerns like Big Val ley, Bonanza, Gunsmoke and The Rifleman. The sta tion we watch is MeTV and I understand it is very much like TVLand. Programs such as The Donna Reed Show, Make Room for Daddy and My Three Sons, bring back fond memories of a time when husbands and fathers weren’t buffoons. M*A*S*H and The Twilight Zone got philosophical and touched on life lessons without beat ing people over the head and had fantastic dialogue. I enjoy laughing at I Love Lucy, The Beverly Hillbil lies, Petticoat and such like, both because they’re funny, but also because these pro grams reach back to a time when good morals were the norm rather than unexpected. And the character actors! These folks are on so many of the same programs and playing different characters so effectively. At times an actor appears in one program and again in the very next program. That’s acting! Hasn’t our warmer weather been gorgeous? I don’t know how many more days we’ll see of Winter, but it sure is fabulous to be able to get these sneak peeks at Spring.
