The Salute to Senior Service program, sponsored by Home Instead, Inc., the franchisor of the Home Instead Senior Care network, honors the contributions of adults 65 and older who give at least 15 hours a month of volunteer service to their favorite causes. Nominations for outstanding senior volunteers will be accepted between Feb. 1 and March 31, 2013. State winners then will be selected by popular vote at SalutetoSeniorService.com. Online voting will take place from April 15 to April 30, 2013. From those state winners, a panel of senior care experts will pick the national Salute to Senior Service honoree. Home Instead, Inc. will donate S500 to each of the state winners’ favorite nonprofit organizations and their stories will be posted on the Salute to Senior Service Wall of Fame. In addition, $5,000 will be donated to the national winner’s nonprofit charity of choice. ”We all know seniors who do so much for our community,” said Brenda Howington, co-owner of the Home Instead Senior Care office serving Macon. ’’These silent heroes give selflessly, expecting nothing in return. And yet, their contributions often make a difference not only to the organizations they serve, but in changing how the public views growing older.” Senior care professionals and those who work at hospitals, senior care facilities and other places where seniors volunteer are encouraged to nominate older adults. So, too, are family caregivers and the adult children of aging parents. Older adults also may self-nominate. To complete and submit a nomination form online for a senior age 65 or older who volunteers at least 15 hours a month, and to view the contest’s official mles, visit SalutetoSeniorService.com. Not pictured: Austin Land and Jacob Lewis. Severe Weather Awareness Week Starts Feb. 4 From tornadoes to lightning to floods, Georgia is susceptible to a variety of natural disasters. Severe weather is dangerous and can strike with very little warning, which is why it’s important to get ready in advance. Severe Weather Awareness Week mns from February 4-8, and it’s a great time to make sure you and your family is prepared. Each day in Severe Weather Awareness Week focuses on a dif ferent type of threat faced by Georgians. Crawford County Emergency Management is encouraging all residents to take a few minutes to learn about how to deal with each emergency situa tion by visiting the Ready Georgia website at www.readv. ga. gov. “During severe weather, emer gency workers might need at least three days to open roadways and restore utilities,” says Director Jake Watson of Crawford County Emergency Management Agency. “If you are prepared to survive independently, it not only helps your family, it also frees up our resources to quickly deal with the most urgent threats.” The week’s activities begin with Family Preparedness Day on Feb. 4, when Crawford County house holds are encouraged to program their NOAA Weather Radios and create Ready Profiles. With a Ready Profile, you can create a customized checklist of emergen cy supphes and a tailored family communications plan. On Wednesday, when tornado safety is emphasized, a statewide tornado drill will be issued by the National Weather Service. Severe Weather Awareness Week’s spe cific observations are: Monday, Feb. 4 - Family Preparedness/NOAA Weather Radio Day Tuesday, Feb. 5 - Thunderstorm Safety Wednesday, Feb. 6 - Tornado Safety and Statewide Tornado Drill (issued by NWS) Thursday, Feb. 7 - Lightning Safety Friday, Feb. 8 - Flood Safety (alternate tornado drill date) Another valuable new tool for Crawford County residents is the Ready Georgia smartphone app. This free app, available for both iPhone and Android devices, pro vides mobile access to a variety of emergency preparedness tools. In addition, Crawford County provides CodeRed Weather Warning notifications to the resi dents of Crawford County. Residents can sign up for C odeRed by visiting www.crawfordcountv- ga.org. We also recommend NOAA Weather Radio as standard operating equipment in every home. NOAA Weather Radio is a nationwide network of radio sta tions dedicated to broadcasting continuous weather information directly from a nearby National Weather Service office.
