Karen Barra- gan chose World History teacher Bethany Cope land as the STAR teacher. Barragan is in dual enrollment at PCHS and Macon State. Dukes' Georgia Reunion Down In History Books By Abigal Adams The Byron Buzz Middle Georgia Raceway has been known for making history. Back in 1970, the raceway held almost half a million people as “hippies in vaded Byron,” when the Pop Festival came to town. This year the raceway has become a part of history yet again, bringing almost 70,000 people from all 50 states and nine different countries (ac cording to event organizer) to meet their favorite cast mem bers of the original Dukes of Hazzard television show. Seven cast members were present this past weekend at the huge classic car show and music festival, Deputy Enos Strate (Sonny Shroyer), Cooter (Ben Jones), Deputy Cletus Hogg (Rick Hurst), Sheriff Roscoe P. Coltrane (James Best), and of course the Dukes, Bo (John Sch neider), Luke (Tom Wopat), and the lovely Daisy (Cath erine Bach), signing auto graphs and meeting fans that stood in lines stretched from one end of the infield to the other. People flocked to the race way not only to see the cast but also to attend concerts by big names like David Allen Coe, Confederate Railroad and Ben Jones and Cooter’s Garage Band and small hometown names like Still Cruizin’ Band, the LACS and Rusty Williams. The bands played on the stage with a backdrop of classic cars cruising around the track behind them. Vendors stretched across the infield surrounded by classic cars lined around the track, most sporting the burnt orange paint job made famous by the General Lee. A helicopter ride buzzed over the heads of festival goers several times an hour and kids played happily on a Charter Group May Get Old Elementary School Building By Victoria Simmons The Byron Buzz Buildings were a major part of the discussions by Byron City Council Monday night. Marj Liaguno, president of the Byron Area His torical Society presented a request to council concern ing repairs to the caboose at the depot. Though she had a much higher proposal, Liaguno said they went with a proposal that made more sense which concisted of pressure washing, sanding the loose paint, primer and paint to the caboose which has needed the work for some time. Moore Painting’s bid of $2800 for that job was submitted, along with a proposal from Val Elliott Art for handpainted lettering and numbers on four sides for a cost of $750. Under the agreement between the two entities, BAHS has to pay $250 and the City pays the remainder. Mayor Larry Collins asked Liaguno if the matter had been brought before the Public Properties Committee and she said ”no” because according to the agreement BAHS is to come to the council first. Collins referred it back to Mark Waters, chairman of that committee to take a look at the pro posals and let BAHS and council know. The Fan Fair will be located at Cooter’s Place on McGavok Place right across from the Grand Ole’ Opry in Nashville and will coincide with the CMA Music Festival. Mayor Collins noted that while each council member spoke for himself, as for ”me and mine, we’re for it”. However, the building cannot be directly trans ferred to the group but will have to be legally conveyed to the group. Waters said the committee had recom mended that the property be transferred as efficiently as possible. Council unani mously agreed to turn the matter over to City Attorney Joan Harris to determine how it can be done and pro ceed accordingly. Walker noted that there had been no survey or ex amination of the property to determine how much acre age was needed or involved for start up of the school.
