Changes
Proposed
At BOE
Peach County Board of
Education members discussed
making changes to the cur
riculum and increasing class
size if necessary at their work
session last week
PCHS has six Advanced
Placement courses already
and board members heard
proposals to add AP courses.
The AP courses will increase
to eight next year and to
13 the following year. For
2013-14 students will have
the option of taking AP clsses
in world history, biology,
chemistry, calculus, statistics,
Englis literature and compo
sition and microeconomics.
American government and
politics will be offered for the
first time to freshmen.
Thanks to grant money,
five additional teachers will
undergo training to teach the
AP classes.
So schools would have
more leeway when new stu
dents move into the district,
board members were asked to
consider adding one student
to the maximum class size in
regular and remedial classes
and two extra students to spe
cial education classes. Board
members will vote on a reso
lution for a class size waiver
at their regular meeting next
week (April 9). Though the
Georgia Dept, of Education
specifies how many students
can be in each class depend
ing on grade level, boards
can request additions to those
limits.
In the next few months,
board members will be decid
ing whether to move forward
with projects slated for 2014
in the system’s five-year
plan, and if so, which projets.
Applications for state fund
ing must be submitted by the
end of August. Those projects
include new gym floors and
roofs for some schools, up
grades and renovation of the
high school kitchen.
