For years, I struggled with the future and worried about all the things that could happen. I was concerned with all my tomorrows, which in turn put a great deal of stress on my todays. I have also found that many times I worried about the days past which didn’t offer the hope I needed to enjoy life that day. One day, as I was driving down a highway close to my home, I noticed a log that had fallen across a creek on the side of the road. The morn ing sun was shining down on the log. I noticed something interesting. Since there was no traffic I stopped my car. There were at least a dozen turtles sunning on the piece of wood. They were basking in the light of the sun. I don’t believe the log would have held even one more turtle. Some were positioned partially on top of another. I wondered how they decided who would have a spot on the log and who wouldn’t. It dawned on me that more than likely the first turtles up got a spot on the log. There were probably others left out in the cold. As I watched from my car the thought crossed my mind that the turtles on the log were probably as happy as a bunch of turtles could be. What more could they ask for than a place in the sun? I was going through a dif ficult time and feeling a great deal of stress at the time. I was worried about many things over which I had no control. But watching the turtles that Ge/eforafe. /r/e Nancy B. Gibbs Motivational Speaker/Writer www.nancybgibbs.com morning caused me to under stand that if we want the best things in life, sometimes we have to get up early. I have also learned that as I live my life I too must bask in the light of the SON, Jesus Christ. When I awake each morning, my thoughts now immediately go to the Lord. I begin praying and sharing words of appre ciation to God for giving me another day to serve Him. I realize that every day is a gift from God and another chance to enjoy my life to the fullest. Jesus truly came to give us abundant lives, not mundane existences. And he wants us to find peace in Him. When I put God first in my life, I find an unmerited amount of peace. Do I still have problems in my life? Certainly. But I see the prob lems from a different light. And I know that God is in control of all things. Are you living in the present, the future or the past? If you’re not living for the present, it would be helpful to wake up early and take some time to bask in the light of the SON. Getting up early and enter ing into the presence of the Lord before the day begins is absolutely the best way to start a day. Why I Like Newspapers By Isabella DeMarco I have always liked print newspapers. Partly, what inspired me was an American Girl movie about a nine-year- old girl living in the 1930s during the Great Depression. Her name is Kit Kittredge. In the movie, she writes news paper stories. The newspaper building she visits amazes me, and the fact that she uses a typewriter to write her stories made me want to be a newspaper reporter. Another movie that intrigues me is The Help, based on a novel by Katheryn Stockett that takes place in Jackson, MS. The main character, Skeeter, goes to the editor of the Jackson Journal to ask for a job to get some experience in writing so that she can write a book. The atmosphere of the newspaper room is full of vibrant activ ity. Also, the editor, who gives Skeeter a job writing the House Cleaning column, is a colorful character. See WHY, Page 5 uotable Quote ~ We have a system that increasingly taxes work and subsidizes non work. — Milton Friedman Do Not Squander Your Time Every now and then, we something almost 24/7. To me While community service need to reassess where we are investing our time and make sure our priorities are in order. Though the quote is from Benjamin Franklin, I always took notice of the sign in Gone With The Wind that said, ”Do not squander time, for that’s the stuff life is made of!” Once the time has gone by there is certainly no retriev ing it and you can not save time for another day. Most of us fill our days with too many things. Of course, we have our jobs where we must invest our time, but what about outside of work? Do you really have to cram so much into so little time? When my children were small I tried to keep them busy in sports, etc. but we did not overload them with different activities. Nowadays it seems as if kids must be kept doing there is something wrong with that picture. There were also days when we would say ”no” to something they thought they wanted to do. Kids no longer entertain themselves by exploring nature and just playing happily outside. In fact, many kids hardly spend any time outside, but are in front of a TV or computer screen. The carefree days of childhood no longer seem to be so carefree for today’s kids, it seems. But back to time. I am once again trying to prioritize my time away from work. There are things that have to be done at home like cleaning but there should be time for you to en joy things. Most of us, myself included, have too much stuff. I am in the process of going through and cleaning out our ’’stuff’. is great and belonging to an organization as well, if you are not enjoying it or it is bring ing you down, then why be involved? I am anti-drama and on a positive campaign to avoid negativity at all cost. That means negative people as well. Life is just way too short and we should be doing some things we enjoy once in a while. This past Saturday, I helped host a women’s ministry conference. It was awesome and God was in the house! One of my daughters was upset that some of the people who ask me to do things for them regularly did not attend. I could sit down and dwell on it and be upset as well, but I refuse to do that at all. We do not do things for others to be repaid and most people are self-centered and everything is about them. But that does not mean we quit doing things. As I have said here before, our faith is not in people. If it is you will be disappointed daily. We are to be encouragers and that is what I try to do daily, regardless of the response I receive back. God sent the people who needed to be there to attend and everyone went away feel ing better than when they had arrived. I do get upset when people say they are going to do some thing and then don’t. Do not say ”yes” if you are not sure, even if you think the other person will be upset. When The Power Of A Prayer The power of a good prayer is, maybe, the best medicine for all that ails a person. I’m not talking about the hand on the head, prophetic television healing type prayer, what I mean is a prayer filled with love and caring. A prayer from the lips of someone who truly cares for you can heal all wounds. This past weekend I was the recipient of five personal prayers from five wonder ful ladies. I attended the women’s conference Light in the Darkness, that was set up by my publisher and editor, the lovely lady who writes the column above me, Ms. Vicky. The day was very anticipated and at every turn the devil seemed to be trying his best to min it for her. I witnessed her stress and aggravation during the planning process and even in my own life he seemed to be dipping his own sharp fingers trying to min the good things in our lives. He almost did too. He made me doubt our future as a family, but my God always prevails over his evil. Al though, sometimes I feel like I’m in it on my own I know God is always there prodding me gently to move along and not question what he has in store for us. I have been given strength in hard times before, given wis dom when I have had doubts and given love when those close to me need it and I feel I don’t have any left to give. He has always been there for me. On Saturday, at the confer ence, He was there in full force touching every woman in the room. Tears flowed eas ily from every eye, in laugh ter, in pain, but most of all, in prayer. My first prayer came from a woman I have met maybe once, Nancy Gibbs. I have read her columns with avid in terest and every word she has to say speaks to me. She is a living example of a dream I have, a writer who was called to write by God. She took me down on my knees after hug ging me and prayed for me. I even put down my camera, casting aside the ever-impor- tant role of reporter, for that moment of peace with her. I stood renewed in my goal to keep on writing day after day, whether it be scribbles in a journal or a blog that keeps me up all night. After her prayer I was ready to take up my pen with a renewed energy I hadn’t felt in years. The next prayer came from the ever-smiling and joyful woman who has become a fast friend of mine, Trenesia Stubbs (her column is on the next page and she is a fabu lous writer too!). She wrapped her arms around me in one of her soft, melt into you, hugs and the prayer flowed sweetly from her lips filling me with warmth. Next the sweet and bubbly Bobbie Evans, with her feet bare and a bright smile on her face, hugged me and prayed for me as well. She exudes laughter and joyful energy. I was further energized to action. As the day rolled on and one of the speakers gave her testimony on how she had all but turned her back on God the whole room was filling with positive energy. One of the singers of Papa’s Pride, Donna brought out her oil and led the whole room in a prayer to help Jill cast aside her guilt. The whole room gathered around her, placing their hands on each other and on Jill, pouring into her God’s peace and grace. I’m sure she went home a different person than when she came in. Before I left I had many troubles on my mind. I was having to rush out to go be Pay at a Time Victoria ’’Vicky” Simmons vsimmonsS4@gmail.com someone tells me something 1 expect them to follow through. I had rather people be upfront with me. Not doing so can affect someone’s time. We need to make better use of our time. If you are not using your time wisely you will not be happy. What is more important in life: going to church or going to a ball- game? Sitting down with your spouse and spending quality time or going off with the girls for a shopping trip? We have to access each situation and see where we need to spend time on each day and decide what is most important. If we do not, before we realize it, we have no time left and it is too late. It’s all about priorities and you only have to look around at people and see that our priorities are out of whack. No wonder our children feel stressed. When I was a kid I did not know anything about stress. My, how times have changed. Do you think about where you invest your time and is the time being well spent? Be an encourager. Spend your time wisely. Wishing you each a blessed week. From Moo To You Abigail ”Abby” Adams abbyadams@pstel.net with my family during a tough moment. Before I left I told Ms. Vicky I was leaving and that I didn’t want to really talk about why. She grabbed my hand and led me quickly to a quiet comer and with her arms wrapped tight around me she prayed for me. As she prayed I felt a pair of cold, but comforting hands upon my back. It was Donna who then said a prayer for me after Ms. Vicky was finished. The tears flowed, but in a way they were cleansing tears. I came home to hardship, but after the light shining through in my darkness, I was able to face the problems and everything in the end turned out just fine. The day has helped to push me further down a path I’ve been stumbling on. Now I have more energy to move on, but above all I have more faith that I will be able to make it to the end and do what God intends for me to do. published every week by Crawford Publishing, LLC.
