Karla Chidester, chair of the event, says, ’’There is no way we could put on such a great festival without our business partners, repeat and new vendors and community volunteers.” Sponsors thus far for the 2013 BoB include City of Byron, Byron CVB, Jeff Smith Chevrolet, Byron Better Hometown, Game Father/Son Dion Goblet and Daniel Rody, father and son of Byron survived a 15 foot fall off the Juliette dam into the Ocmulgee River on Wednes day April 3rd. The BoB will again be at North Peach Park, this year under the shade trees. The BoB annual Road Race will be the following Saturday, May 11th begin ning at the Byron Mimicipal Complex. There is always room for more volunteers. Volunteers help with vendor check in and set up, parking, the BoB booth, assisting with games and challenges and the clean up. Both suffered minor injuries. A fisherman, who was on the shore, jumped into the river to pull them to safety. When Monroe County EMTs arrived, the men were sitting on the river bank. All three were treated at the scene for mild hyperthermia and did not want to go to the hospital. Survive Fall Into River Windham Named To Library Board Marilyn N. Windham was recently appointed by the Peach County Commis sioners to the Peach Public Libraries Board of Trustees. Windham, a longtime sup porter of the library system, will serve for the next four years. Working with the histori cal collection of the library has been a project of hers for some time. The library holds many pieces of Fort Valley and Peach County history which needs to be maintained and organized so that the collection is the most accessible to the public for research. Windham is no stranger to public service. She was responsible for doing the research and completing all the necessary paperwork for the Everett Square Historic District. The district was placed on the National Reg ister of Historic Places in 1995, interestingly enough on her birthday. In 1990 she received the Athena Award from the Peach County Chamber of Commerce for her work in the community. In 1997 her book, Peach County, The World’s Peach Paradise, was published highlighting the Fort Valley peach blossom festivals of the 1920s. She was also a contributor to the new book, in Fort Valley. She recently retired from teaching at Peach County High School, of course, she was a social studies teacher. Windham, now, is a volun teer at the Museum of Avia tion in their archives. “It is a great honor to be named to the library board of trustees. I hope to make a difference in seeking the best opportunities for the library system to provide the best for our citizens. I espe cially enjoy working with our historical collection and helping preserve and protect the collection for years to come,” she stated. Corporations Warned About Fraud Atlanta - Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp alerted corporations his office has received recent complaints about solicitations sent from a firm called “Compliance Services.” The firm offers to complete corporate meeting minutes on behalf of Geor gia corporations for a fee. Despite what the solicitation claims, Georgia corporations are not required by law to file corporate minutes with the Secretary of State’s Corpora tions Division. Secretary Kemp said, “Georgia’s corporations should be cautious regard ing any suspicious solicita tion, and practice their due diligence to prevent corporate fraud and identity theft.” Although the solicitation from Compliance Services contains language from vari ous Georgia Code sections and a disclaimer stating “This product has not been ap proved or endorsed by any government agency and this offer is not being made by an agency of the government,” some corporate officers have been understandably con fused by the official-looking documents. It is important to remember that any official statement or request from the Secretary of State will clearly indicate its origin by displaying the State Seal and the name of Secretary of State Brian Kemp. Secretary Kemp has been recognized by his fellow Secretaries of State as a national leader in implement ing e-govemment solutions to combat corporate fraud and identity theft, and in raising awareness among business owners, financial institutions and law enforcement agencies about this growing criminal activity.
