Page 2 Thursday, April 11, 2013 THE GEORGIA POST &THE BYRON BUZZ Changing Of The Guard On March 22,2013,1 was taken on a tour of what used to be Central State Hospital, in Milledgeville, Georgia. This was my first vision of the complete facil ity in 42 years. When my family first moved to the area in 1968, to assume the pastorate of First Assembly of God Church, (which was adjacent to the Hospital,) there were approximately 13,000 patients (of multiple categories) housed in this renown Institution. Though a portion of the numerous buildings were added along the way, many of the struc tures, and accompanying utilities, were constructed nearly a century ago! To be sure, the brick founda tions were intended to be an enduring work; and true to course, they stand as examples of credible work manship. Lighting, ventila tion, and utilities are another story! Today, the vast acreage in volved in this extensive proj- ect. is essentially a ’’ghost town”—for most buildings are empty, shudders drawn, and the more vulnerable comers boarded up—all primarily victims of bureau cracy rather than ’’wind or weather.” The ’’changing of the Guard” in high places has sent echoes to the most hidden crevice—with silence being accentuated! Not all of the disestablishment is due to politics, budgetary antics, or personnel distribution; for ’’time marches on”, and often it is more productive to ’’completely destruct and rebuild”, than to make resto ration. In actuality, some of the buildings are being taken over by the City, Georgia College, and Prison Sys tems. Those that are familiar with the entire surroundings, undoubtedly gaze upon cur rent conditions with minds of reminiscence; and ques tions as to why such noble structures have not been refurbished for a practical utilization! I feel sure the experts have rendered their take on the matter. Senior Kirina Corona and her date for the Peach County High School Prom which was M held this past week end. Daniel W. Gatlyn, USNRet., Minister/ Journalist All the various inmates, elderly souls, Military Veterans, the prison popula tion, drug addicts, insane, criminally insane, Children’s Ward, and the physically incapacitated thousands have been ’’farmed out” to other districts or facilities— with ”re posturing of values” by governmental direction! Thousands of the more criti cal persons have expired— with many interred on adja cent properties-a host with scarcely marked graves! While all such facilities enjoy a measure of success with dedicated workers, the history of the Milled geville Hospital does not offer an inspiring com mentary! ’’Annie” was just one patient who clarified such a report. Annie died around 1972; and (accord ing to the late Commenta tor Walter Cronkite,) the records revealed she had not received one visitor in over fifty years! I cried when learning of this incident and condition; for our pastorate was part of that time frame. I never knew of Annie while she lived. But somehow, I felt partly responsible! Incredible, you say??
