PAGE 4 THE BYRON BUZZ SECTION of The GEORGIA POST Thursday, April 18, 2013 The Bible On Obedience God created man in the beginning in His own im age (Gen 1:27). It is God’s holy will that His creation will have personal happiness and eternal welfare and the way for man to receive this is revealed through the Bible. In studying the Bible we can leam through human history that man’s obedience to God’s will has always brought hap piness and disobedience has always brought unhappiness. “Obedience” is a key word in the Bible, from Genesis to Revelation. In Hebrews 5:5-9 it is said about Jesus, “So also Christ did not glorify Himself to be come High Priest, but it was He who said to Him: ‘You are My Son, Today I have begotten You.’ As He also says in another place: ‘You are a priest forever According to the order of Mel-chiz’e- dek’; who, in the days of His flesh, when He had offered up prayers and supplications, with vehement cries and tears to Him who was able to save Subscribe Today & Keep Up With Your Community Him from death, and was heard because of His godly fear; though He was a Son, yet He learned obedience by the things which He suffered.” Here the one word - OBEDI ENCE - is made to stand for the sum response God expects of man. All the blessings found in Christ come to man through him being obedient to God’s will. In the context of Hebrews, Jesus himself set forth the example of obedience, “though He was a Son, yet He learned obedi ence.” To the Philippians, Paul presented the Lord as the example of a right response to the will of God, “And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.” (Phil 2:8). From this passage we gather that obedi ence is a twofold proposi tion: (1) it is a requirement of God, and (2) it is an example provided before man by the Christ. With this thought in mind, we can know that God demands obedience by those who would serve Him. The church, those who have been obedient to the Christ, must continually stress the fact of obedience to God’s will as taught in the Bible. The Lord gives continual emphasis on the necessity of being obedient. Jesus stressed that obedience is more than just a verbal declaration in Matthew 7:21, “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven.” and again in Luke 6:46, “But why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord’ and not do the things which I say?” Paul told the church in 2 Thessalonians 1:7-8, “and to give you who are troubled rest with us when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with his mighty angels, in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.” It is clear from this text that man’s choice is to obey God or be lost! Paul lamented in Romans 10:1-3 the fact that his own brethren (in Judaism) were lost despite their zeal, “Breth ren, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for Israel is that they may be saved. For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge. For they, being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and seeking to establish their own righteous ness, have not submitted to the righteousness of God.” Paul then summed up their James Earnhardt Evangelist Church of Christ position as “lost men”, for, they did not all hearken to the glad tidings of the gospel. . Again, we can notice that Paul said he had lived be fore God in good conscience (Acts23:l). He had been exceedingly zealous for his religion; but he was wrong! Therefore, no matter how hard one works, no matter how much one gives and no matter how knowledgeable of the Bible one may be, this is not “enough” to be pleas ing and acceptable to God! Neither does it matter how sincere one may “feel.” All of this on man’s part is to no avail unless he is obedient to the truth of God’s commands.
