Paul’s point of view was that there is an advantage in dying over living. Death held no terror for him; Jesus had taken the terror out of death, and his fel lowship with Jesus gave him courage to face death with the thought of gain. Philippians 1:21 tells us, “For me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain.” The reader is encouraged to read all of Philippians 1 to understand Paul’s statement more fully. Paul’s life was Christ centered, not self-centered. It was his aim to do only those things which would honor the Lord. His life was devoted to Christ, and he intended to spend it for Him. To live this Christ-centered life one must (1) leam all he can about Christ; His person, His work, His character and His will concerning mankind; and (2) determine to live like Christ; to emulate Him in feelings, motives, desires, thoughts, words and deeds. Paul’s one purpose in living was to honor Christ. He said it did not make any difference to him whether he lived or died, for if he lived he would honor Christ in his life and if he died he would die in such a way as to bring honor and glory to his Lord! (Phil. 1:20). If we live our life in this manner, then we too shall be ready to die! Why was death gain for Paul? He wrote to the Corin thians in 2 Cor. 5:8, “We are confident yes, well pleased rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord.” In all probability Paul was expecting the death sentence from Nero or had already been condemned to die. He wrote to Timothy in 2 Tim. 4:6-7, “For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure is at hand. It is no surprise that he would write; “For me, ... to die is gain.” Paul knew that beyond death he would have the privilege of being with God whom he had not seen and with Jesus whom he had not known personally on earth. God and Jesus will dwell beyond time with all the saved peoples of all time and of every age. (Rev. 21:3-4). They will be together as long as time exists. “To die” will be gain for Paul for in the land of fade less day to which he has gone, “And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.”(Rev 21:4). Paul will join the apostle John in knowing that, “.. .’Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on.’ ‘Yes’, says the Spirit, ‘that they may rest from their labors, and their works follow them’.” (Rev. 14:13) If we want to “gain” at our death then we must make our preparation in this life ie say aoou James Earnhardt Evangelist Church of Christ by making our life Christ- centered as Paul’s was. We do this by being a friend of Jesus by being obedient to His gospel. We must: (1) hear the word of the gospel, and believe (Acts 15:7) (2) Believe that God raised Jesus from the dead. (Rom. 10:9) (3) Confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus as the Son of God (Rom. 10:9) (4) Repent of your sins. (Acts 17:30) (5) Be baptized for the re mission of sins. The students were evaluated based on 10 evident soft skills: discipline and character, attendance, community service project, productivity and academic performance, responsibility and organization, attitude and respect, team work and work habits, self-management and time management, oral and written business communica tion skills, appearance and professional image. More over, Holland McTier quali fied as one of the state finalist for GeorgiaBEST Student of the Year. The Department of La bor, in answer to the grow ing need for graduates with soft skills, spearheaded the GeorgiaBEST program. In conjunction to this program, DOL also provides regional support specialists who come into the campus and give workshops to the students.
