PAGE 4 THE BYRON BUZZ SECTION of The GEORGIA POST Thursday, June 27,2013 Just How Are We Saved ? The salvation of the soul from sin and from eternal punishment in hell is the most important undertak ing in which any person can be engaged. Jesus asked in Matthew 16:26, “For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?” We understand that “soul” can have various shades of meaning, one of which is to refer to the eternal part of man. That is the sense in which it is used by this article. There is something about every human being that is immortal and eternal; some thing that will survive beyond physical death is the soul. The Bible is clear that there are but two destinies for the soul, one is heaven and the other is hell (Matt. 7:13- 14). Each of these places is eternal (Matt. 25:46). Heaven is beautiful beyond human ability to comprehend and is deserving of every effort that has been made and must be made to gain it. Hell is hor rible beyond human ability to comprehend and is deserving of every effort that has been made and must be made to avoid it. How are we saved? The observant student of Scripture is aware of the fact that salva tion is attributed to a number of factors. There are two sides to this question, the di vine side and the human side, each containing a number of factors: THE DIVING SIDE OF SALVATION: (1) GOD - Paul wrote, “For this is good and accept able in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.” (1 Tim. 2:3 & 4). Likewise in writing to Titus the apostle spoke of “.. .God our Savior toward man appeared.” (Titus 3:4b). Without God we would all be hopelessly lost! (2) GOD’S GRACE - “For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men.” (Titus 2:11). “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God, not of works, lest any one should boast.” Eph. 2:8 & 9). Notice, “The Lord is ... not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.” (2 Peter 3:9). (3) CHRIST - “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16). Christ came to the earth for the express purpose to seek and save the lost (Luke 19:10). (4) THE BLOOD OF CHRIST - To redeem man from sin, Christ had to shed His blood, “But Christ came as a High Priest of the good things to come, with the great er and more perfect tabernacle not made with hands, that is, not of this creation. Not with the blood of goats and calves, but with His own blood He entered the Most Holy Place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption.” (Heb. 9:11 & 12). Christ announced at the institution of His sup per, “For this is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the remis sion of sins.’’(Matt. 26:28). (5) THE GOSPEL OF CHRIST - Paul wrote, “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek.” (Rom. 1:16) He further states in 1 Cor. 15:1 & 2, “Moreover, brethren, I de clare to you the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received and in which you stand, by which also you are saved, if you hold fast that word which I preached to you—unless you believed in vain.” THE HUMAN SIDE OF SALVATION: (1) FAITH - Heb. 11:6 states, “But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.” Jesus declared in Matt. 8:24b, “for if you do not believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.” Jesus instructed His apostles in Mark 16:15 & 16, “...’Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every crea ture. He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned.’” (2) REPENTANCE - Jesus warned in Luke 13:3 “I tell you, no; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish.” And again in verse 5, “I tell you, no; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish.” Paul affirms that God “.. .now commands all men everywhere to repent.” (Acts 17:30). (3) BAPTISM-When the people asked Peter and the apostles on Pentecost, “What shall we do?” Acts 2:38 tells us, “Then Peter said to them, Photography _ Classes www.BeginitiitgPholoCliiticS.coxn Classes for all ability levels - (478) 956-6973 bonniesworkshops@gmail.com Get a new do for summer or work OEi^our tan In our tanning beds. James Earnhardt Evangelist Church of Christ ‘Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remis sion of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.’” One of the condi tions which one must do to be saved is baptism. As stated in Mark 16:16a, “He who believes and is baptized will be saved;...” These are a few of the requirements on man’s part in order to receive and retain eternal salvation. Obedience and faithful ness to God until death must be considered when the plan of salvation is studied. Yes salvation is provided free by God which is the divine part of salvation but God has placed some requirements man must meet to qualify for the receipt of that free gift, this is the human side of salvation. Hebrews 11:6 tells us, “But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.”?
