During the first week of June, Amy Hill and Andrea Seagraves, teachers at Craw ford County’s Eagles Nest, taught eight students, ages 4-6, about the fruits we grow in Georgia. The children learned about different fruit groups and focused each day on a fruit that is grown com mercially in our state. The children learned that apples and pears are pome fruits with small seeds on the in side; watermelon and can taloupe grow well in South Georgia and have a hard rind on the outside. Peaches and plums are stone fruits with a non-edible seed in the pit; and strawberries, blueber ries, blackberries and mus cadine grapes are all berries of different shapes, sizes, and colors. The campers had a great time bowling with cantaloupes, making fried peach pies, painting with ber ries, and much more! They learned how each commodity affects Georgia commerce, where it originated from, its life cycle, and its nutritional value. On the last day of camp the children enjoyed visiting the personal garden of Reverend Joe McDaniel of Musella Baptist Church and Dickey Farms. “Grow ing Academics through Ag riculture” summer camp was possible because of generous supporters in our commu nity.
