Sex Scandals ofU.S. While President Obama is a devoted family man with no perceivable adulterous inclinations, this has not been the case for a number ofU.S. Presidents. Bill Clinton (1993-2001) was involved with several women, including a 12-year affair with Gennifer Flowers when he was Governor of Arkansas and a dalliance in the White House with a 22-year-old intern named Monica Lewinsky The Lewinsky affair led to impeachment proceedings against the President that passed in the House, but failed in the Senate. President John Kennedy (1961-1963) had long temi affairs with model Judith Exner and movie starlet Marilyn Monroe. Because of their ties to the mob, both paramours were eventually jettisoned. President Grover Cleveland (1885-1889; 1903-1997) sired an “orphan son” out of wedlock. This indiscretion became fodder for the press during the presidential campaign. A major newspaper cartoon depicted the sobbing mother, Maria C. Halpin, clutching her infant child as President Cleveland plugged his ears to the baby’s cries of “I want my papa!” Dwight Eisenhower (1953- 1961), while serving as Supreme Allied European Commander during World War II, fostered a highly publicized affair with his wartime driver, Kay Summersby, which was roundly criticized by then President Harry Truman. President Franklin Roosevelt’s (1933-1945) clandestine trysts with Lucy Mercer almost brought his marriage to an end. His wife, Eleanor, forgave him, but never fully trusted him again. Before Andrew Jackson (1829-1837) became president, he married a woman named Rachel Donelson, who had not been legally divorced. Even though this happened thirty years previously, it was used against Jackson in the presidential election. Lyndon Johnson (1963- 1969) once boasted that he’d had more women by accident than his predecessor, President Kennedy, had on purpose. One mistress, Presidents Madeleine Brown, claimed in a newspaper interview after Johnson’s death to have bom him a son. Moral depravity is very pervasive in our society, but the office of President of the United States is one that demands the highest standards of morality. As leader of the free world, the President should be the exemplar, not the paragon of turpitude. Even the Bible is not exempt from adulterous affairs, the most notorious being King David’s extramarital affair with Bathsheba, a married woman. David sent Bathsheba’s husband, Uriah, to the front lines of battle so he would be killed. When Bathsheba learned she was pregnant, the prophet Nathan admonished David, “Because you have shown utter contempt for the Lord, the son bom to you will die.” Webster’s Dictionary defines adultery as: “voluntary sexual intercourse between a married man and someone other than his wife or between a married woman and someone other than her husband” A recent survey reported that 57 percent Billy Powell Columnist www.billypowellbooks.com of American men and 54 percent of American women admitted to committing infidelity. A whopping 74 percent of men and 68 percent of women say they would have an affair if they knew they would never be caught. In the Old Testament, God declared adultery to be a sin deserving death: “If a man commits adultery with the wife of his neighbor, both the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death.” Jesus issued a more sweeping definition of adultery, saying: “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery. ’ But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” PAGE 6 - THURSDAY, JUNE 27,2013 Weekly Devotion By Angie Carr Columnist In Spite Of I am reminded of the woman who was caught in adultery. The Pharisees wanted to stone her but Jesus stooped and wrote on the ground with His finger as though He never heard them and said to them; “He that is without sin among you let him first cast a stone.” I believe Jesus was telling them to take a look at your own lie and to stop and recognize that we all have sinful nature. When others are caught in sin, are we quick to pass judgment, acting as though we have never sinned? We point the finger at others when we ought to be pointing fingers at ourselves. It is God’s role to judge; not ours. Our role is to show forgiveness and compassion and to let them know that God still loves you “in spite of’. We should look for ways to help others than to hurt them. I also believe the prostitutes, the drug addicts, the whore mongers etc. will be some of the greatest Christians once they are converted and that is our job to do. Jesus didn’t condemn the woman accused of adultery, he just told her, “to go and sin no more.” Jesus stands ready to forgive any sin in our lives. If we confess our faults and have a change of heart; He will forgive us. No matter who we are, how old we are and all of our wrong; He still loves aand cares for us unconditional; in spite of. Funeral services were held Thursday, June 20, 2013 in the chapel of Heritage Memorial Funeral Home with burial in Glen Haven Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Elliott was bom in Macon, GA. She was the daughter of the late Bennie and Helen (Frost) Poole. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Carrie Suzanne “Susie” Elliott and a brother, Bennie Larry Poole. Mrs. Elliott was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and sister. Survivors include her husband of 41 years Robert P. Elliott of Fort Valley, daughter Tammy E. (Bobby) Prince of Pleasant View, 2 granddaughters Natasha A. Webb, Rebecca M. Webb, brother Little Ralph Poole of Forsyth, sisters Dona (Ernest) Robinson of Lizella, Lucy Dianne Homes of Byron and sister -in-law. She is also survived by her special pets, Stubby and Dusty.
