The terms ’’Stress Test” and ’’Treadmill” are syn onymous and someone from the background is heard to utter; ”I’d rather eat dirt!” It may not be the thing to float your boat, but it may just be the apparatus that adds to your years on planet earth. A fairly good cross section of American persona now ex periences this medical treat. Having had a bout with my heart several years ago, I adhere to the pharmaceutical schedule set up by profes sionals — drink my milk — wash my face — take my nap — and go for my annual physical. Along with this compassionate recipe comes the subject of’’treadmill”, at least every four years, and with questionable patients, more often than that. My last encounter had been 2001, so the good Dr. Meyer (Macon Medical Center, and perhaps the most knowledgeable physician in these mat ters locally) prescribed the ’’monster machine” — and all for free! (Yeah, right!!!!) I was directed by Carla - personable and professional aid for ’’Cardiac Comers”- who processed me through the paperwork, and prelimi nary examination such as weight, blood pressure, and the typical ’’four thousand questions”! (She even com mended me when I got some right!) She then hauled out a hypodermic (filled with God knows what), and told me this first dose was an IV to clear the pipes. That’s when my pulse started rac ing toward the door! The next one, which followed immediately, was the magic potion that would allow the sophisticated ’’picture box” to produce clear images of my ’’upper innards”! I was then steered to the ’’photo shop”, made to lie on my back for fifteen minutes, while the cameras played their part. Carla said this was to ’’find out where I was, before I wasn’t????? The procedure would be repeated immediately following the treadmill; providing I didn’t flake out! I was then led to the ’’monster” (I could have sworn it growled at me); hooked to the monitor (I looked like a ’’subsidiary of Georgia Power) and the trip was on! As I stepped on, with Dr. Meyer ob serving, I uttered under my breath, ”A piece of cake!” The next few sec onds were ’’Sunday School”, then someone got nasty! The following minutes I was def initely in ’’church”! I figured with my pitiful gaze that some authority would decide I’d had enough! They went to war instead, and for the next hour and forty seven minutes (give or take), I was a tri-athelete on my way to winning a marathon! Somewhere between ’’Peo ria and Purgatory”, and I’m not out of the woods yet! A can of sprite, more pictures, and three days later, I finally mouthed again, ”A piece of cake”! Seriously, the treadmill is only eight minutes, but it is the place to set the record straight; and those with chest pains, previous heart problems or recommenda tions by a physician, should take advantage of this most revealing process! It could make the difference as to whether you are greeted to morrow by your loved ones, or by the funeral home! for two days or you can get in free if you bring a five pound bag of dog or cat food.
