McLeighton Elected To Executive Board Of Statewide Association --Installed as Secretary of Georgia Funeral Directors Association-- David McLeighton Newly Elected Secretary/ Executive Board Member Georgia Funeral Directors Association, Inc. David McLeighton, owner of McLeighton Funeral Ser vice with locations in Butler, Reynolds and Roberta, Geor gia, has been elected to the Executive Board of Georgia Funeral Directors Associa tion, Inc. (GFDA). Formed in 1899, GFDA is the oldest funeral services association in the state. McLeighton joins the GFDA Executive Board for a one-year term as secre tary, then moves to treasurer, president-elect and ultimate ly president of the Associa tion. During his June 2013 in stallation at the GFDA 113th state convention, McLeigh ton stated, ”1 am pleased to accept this position rep resenting funeral directors throughout the state of Geor gia. I am proud to be given the opportunity to enhance the funeral services profes sion with the general public, the legislature and others whose lives and businesses we touch.” McLeighton graduated in 1995 as salutatorian of Gupton - Jones College of Funeral Service in Decatur, Georgia, where he served as president of Phi Sigma Eta National Morticians Frater nity. He received the Dan iel E. Buchanan Award for showing great enthusiasm, helpfulness and camaraderie to the Pi Sigma Eta Fraterni ty. He also received a Scho lastic Achievement Award. McLeighton currently serves as deputy coroner of Taylor County, Georgia. He and his wife, Donna are the owners/operators of McLeighton Funeral Servic es, Inc. with three locations in the state. He is president-elect of the Taylor County Kiwanis Club and Roberta-Crawford County Chamber of Com merce and currently serves as chairman of the board of the Crawford County Coun seling and Learning Center. He and his wife are members of the First Baptist Church, Reynolds. Georgia Funeral Directors Association, Inc. is a state wide membership organiza tion of licensed funeral di rectors and sales associates serving the funeral profes sion. GFDA provides con tinuing education, state and federal legislative support and interaction, and on-going communication with mem bership about key develop ments in business and regu latory areas which affect the profession. It also serves as a public resource for informa tion on all aspects of funeral service. The corporate office is in Roswell, Georgia, with membership throughout the state. GFDA also maintains a close working relationship with the National Funeral Di rectors Association including representatives on the na tional policy board. ’’Knock It Out of the Park’’ Celebration Kids had a blast at the ’’Knock It Out of the Park” celebration event held last Saturday at Crossroads Store. The kids had a 20ft slide and deluxe obstacle course to play on. Kids also got their faces paint ed and baseballs autographed by former Atlanta Brave Brian Jordan. Rhe’a Harrell FVSU Team Success Intern For most teens the sum mer is a time of relaxation. But for Rhe’a Harrell, a 2013 Crawford County High School graduate, it’s been weeks of commitment to a 40-hour work week. Harrell is among 15 stu dents chosen from Georgia counties to be a Fort Valley State University TEAM Suc cess intern for six weeks. The acronym, TEAM, stands for teaching, enlightening, achieving and mentoring. The Team Success intern ship is a summer program for recent high school gradu ates, seniors and juniors of fered through FVSU’s Coop erative Extension Program. The Cooperative Extension Program is a land-grant col lege and university based program whose purpose is to deliver information and pro vide opportunities to all citi zens in the areas of food and nutrition, agriculture, family life and community develop ment. For the summer, each stu dent is paired with a local county agent which they shadow the entire course of the internship. Activi ties may include assisting with nutrition and budgeting classes or teaching children and seniors. Harrell, 18, who shadows Keep up with your local news, sports and community events. Call 836-3195 today for rates! FVSU’s Crawford County extension agent Millicent Price, said prior to her sum mer experience, she did not know FVSU offered pro grams to citizens in Craw ford. After assisting Price with the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Pro gram (EFNEP), Harrell said she understands the benefits of extension for residents in Crawford County. “The program is neat be cause it shows that you don’t have to spend a lot of money on food to provide a decent meal for a family,” Harrell said. Harrell said the TEAM Success program has ex posed her to FVSU and pro fessions in the area of fam ily and consumer sciences. In the future, the Crawford County resident said she plans to attend FVSU and may consider family and consumer sciences as her major. On July 11 at the pro gram’s closing ceremony on FVSU’s campus, Harrell will conclude the program by submitting a one-page essay and presenting a five- minute PowerPoint presen tation about her summer ex perience.
