I have sailed the oceans, been to war, climbed the mountains, traversed desert spaces, chased tumbleweeds (and Jackalopes) through forbidden territory—-sang with the choir, preached to the heathen (and the righ teous), farmed longer than anyone should, withstood the ’’after Thanksgiving lines” in Belks, battled with every persuasion among political ranks—even got married and multiplied (troubling comers)—and somehow I have survived it all! But I have met my Waterloo in recent days—a stranger that invaded home turf! For more years than I can recall, it has been my extreme privilege to have ’’placed feet on floor” each morning, week after week, month after month, and — and yes I rejoice that colds, aches and pains, twisted torso, fevered brow, ’’the skids”, ’’the rumpies”, and the cooties; have all passed me by; as multiplied thou sands of engagements or commitments were answered to! I have even escaped unscathed from leprosy (at least I think), since the incubation is approximately fifty years—and it has now been sixty (plus) years since I came into contact with the colony on the Island of Tin ian, in 1953! But alas, a door of infamy has opened, and I am totally discombobu- lated!!!! Five days ago, I awoke to stabbing pains, and an elevated temperature. My knees were wobbly, and I noticed my vision was impaired! The most sure evidence of an impending disaster, was that my feet had no desire to leave the bed! (And I quickly noticed that my body was trying to follow my feet!) My stom ach was queasy, and a cough had replaced my charm and mellowness! My throat was scratchy, and my will to live had been reduced considerably! In short, I was ’’sick”! (Let me spell that for you—”s-i-c-k, sick, sick”!!) And ’’sick” has not been in my vocabulary! I can do windows, do dishes, do the lawn; I can do lunch- -but I am not good at doing ’’Sick”! I fingered the keys for 911, thumbed the yellow pages for physicians (horse doctor, dog doctor—any body that I thought might help! Was ready to call the gynecologist, when I real ized his portfolio, probably would have prescribed hormones that helped my voice, but I was hurting farther ’’north and south”! Then It said, ’’call for the Elders”! And again I was back in trouble! When one is (older than dirt), who do you call that is an Elder?? whoa! Searching the medicine cabinet for a possibility, I spied several bottles that gave hope! All were old, but maybe they would still work! As I began to read directions, and cautions—I could hear my heart thump ing! ”If you have aches, dizzi ness, shortness of breath, spots, chills, fever, sores, swelling, open wounds; or if depressed, anxious—or feel suicidal-CEASE ALL DOSAGE, AND CALL A DOCTOR! Why would they package this stuff? ”1 thought it was for sickness- -AND THAT IS WHAT I AM!” Help!!
