PAGE 5-THURSDAY, AUGUST 22,2013 Was Genesis patterned after Enuma Elishl Since no human was around to witness the creation of the heavens and the earth, it is natural to wonder how the creation story in Genesis, chapters 1&2, was conceived. Some theologians say that Moses wrote Genesis; oth ers contend that four different priests were its authors. Did God provide direct inspira tion for the Genesis account of creation or was it patterned after an existing source? Such a source was the “Enuma El- ish,” a Babylonian creation mythos discovered ini 849 during the unearthing of an an cient library at Nineveh (now Mosul, Iraq). Its title was taken from the epic’s open ing words: “when above.” The myth comprised seven clay tablets totaling about 1000 sentences that were written in cuneiform characters during the reign of King Hammu rabi around 1800 B.C. George Smith translated its text in his book, “The Chaldean Account of Genesis,” published in 1876. The Biblical account of Genesis was recorded around 1500 B.C., postdating the Babylonian epic by several hundred years. Many scholars conclude that the similarities between Enuma Elish and the Genesis creation narrative indicate that the author of Genesis may have patterned chapters 1 and 2 after this Babylonian myth. Four significant similarities are: (1) a primeval darkness that predated creation, (2) a firmament (dome above the earth) that divided the waters, (3) the creation of mankind, and (4) the existence of light before creation of the luminar ies. Genesis 1:2 speaks thusly of a primeval darkness: “The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep, and the Spirit of God was moving over the face of the waters.” Genesis 1:6-10 addresses a “firmament in which “the wa ters under the firmament were divided from the waters above the firmament” producing the dry land and the seas. In Gen esis 1:3, God created light, “calling the light Day and the darkness Night.” In Genesis, man was created from the dust of the earth to rule over the animal kingdom while, in Enuma Elish, man is created from a god’s blood to be slaves of the gods. Co incidentally, man was created on the 6th day in Genesis and in the 6th tablet of Enuma El ish. Further, the Genesis cre ation story was completed in seven days, and Enuma Elish was recorded on seven tablets. Enuma Elish does not contain an account of the creation of vegetation, animals, birds, reptiles and fishes, unless it was included in the 118 miss ing lines of Tablet V—which is doubtful. After careful study of Enuma Elish, I consider it is highly unlikely that the author of Genesis borrowed creation history from this fictitious tale. Furthermore, Enuma Elish is ludicrous—its pantheon of Babylonian gods constantly warring with each other and perpetrating out landish acts. Consequently, it would be a stretch to infer that the Genesis account is tailored after Enuma Elish. Inasmuch as II Timothy 3:16 states that “All scripture is given by in spiration of God,” I believe that God spoke to the heart of the Genesis writer in a “still, small voice” to guide his or ganization and composition of the creation account. Change Your Situation i Have you ever listened to the song, “Change your Situa tion?” Listening to it the other day, I quickly arose and began to speak over my life and other areas. It really ministered to me. It was talking about the valley of the dry bones in the book of Ezekiel the 37th chapter. I was very blessed by reading it. Let me first start by ask ing you, “Did you know that you have the power and the authority to change your situ ation?” God told Ezekiel to speak over the dry bones. Now, the dry bones could be a number of things, your dry bones could be sickness, your finances, children, spouses or even a dead church. God told Ezekiel to speak to it, just as he tells us, so that he can bring restoration to any circumstance we’re facing. Right then he gave Ezekiel the power and authority to change his situation. We have that same power by speak ing life. We don’t have to be afraid just believe, it’s not over. You see, if the devil can keep us quiet, he can keep us in the same place or situa tion. This is where he wants us. But it’s very simple if we would just open our mouths and speak life over our situ ation, then God will restore anything we ask. Sometimes we have to encourage ourselves and one another. One thing for sure, it’s not over until God says it’s over. He gets the last word.
