DEAD From Page 4 vana” which, to a Buddhist, is the ultimate state of existence. Catholics have invented a place called “purgatory” where one goes for tempo rary punishment and can be released if their living loved ones are willing to pay enough of an “indulgence” to the church to secure his release to heaven. Other situations can be presented, but if a person is a Christian, then he or she must leave the bottom line to God and what He says in the Holy Bible. This being the case let’s examine briefly what the Bible says about what happens at death. We will do this by quoting some scriptures that will make the answer crystal clear. In the book Ecclesiastes chapter 9 and verses 5, 6 and 10 we read these words, “For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is for gotten. Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, is now perished; neither have they any more a portion for ever in any thing that is done under the sun.” “Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom in the grave, whither thou goest.” These texts make it abun dantly clear that when a person dies, all his thoughts, feelings, emotions, ideas and doings die with him. He does not fly or float off some where to a place of reward or punishment but goes to the grave. Other texts shed light on this subject also. One is found in Job chapter 14 verses 10 and 12 where the Bible says, “But man dieth, and wasteth away; yea, man giveth up the ghost, and where is he?” “So man lieth down, and riseth not; till the heavens be no more, they shall not awake, nor be raised out of their sleep.” Another text is found in Psalm 115 and verse 17 where the Bible says, “The dead praise not the Lord, nei ther any that go down into silence.” These texts (and there are many others) make it clear that when a person dies he is dead and in the grave. But one day the dead will live again. The Bible let’s us know that all who have died will come up in either the first or second resurrection (yes, there will be two resur rections). The first will be that of the righteous told to us in I Thessalonians chapter four verse 16 where the Bible says, “For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first.” Also in Revelation chapter 20 and verse 6 we read these words, “Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection; on such the second death hath no power. 55 When Jesus went to raise Lazarus from the dead, He asked the people to show Him where they had laid him. They then led Christ to Lazarus tomb. Now if Lazarus was in Heaven, as some would have us believe of the righteous dead, then Christ would not have had to go to his tomb but could have stood anywhere and said, “Lazarus come down.” But Christ did not do that; rather He went to Lazarus tomb (his grave) and said “Lazarus, come forth.” Why? The very simple reason is that Jesus called Lazarus from where he was; not from Heaven, nor from a place of torment but from where He will call all the rest of the dead - FROM THEIR GRAVES.
