A project, which began with lots of love as the need to do something for the victims of the shooting. The project is nearing completion and to celebrate there will be a Comforting Quilters Blessing of the Sandy Hook Quilts on Saturday, September 29, from 2-4 p.m. at the Byron Welcome Center. Refreshments will be served and the blessing will begin at 3P-m. Leading the blessing will be Bishop Daniel Varga and Audrey George. Varga serves Progressive Episcopal Church as Director of Chaplains. In his position he is respon sible for all clergy assigned to chaplain position in the United States Armed Forces and civilian public safety departments including police, fire and EMS. In addition, he serves as Diocesan Bishop of the Diocese of Georgia and is chaplain for the Byron Fire Department. As Bishop, Varga is respon sible to pray for and tend to those entrusted to the care of the Holy Church; manage the clergy and resources of the church; faithfully admin ister all Holy Sacraments and provide guidance to the flock as God’s shepherd. Varga grew up in Nebraska and Wales. He first heard the call of God while serving in the Church for Wales in Govilon, Gwent at Christ Church. He returned to Nebraska and joined the U.S. Marine Corps after high school, serving for ten years on active^ duty before transfer ring to the Army Reserve and then the Air Force Reserve. As an active duty member he retired after 28 years of service, hav ing served as a military chap lain in the Armed Forces. Varga has served as a chap lain with Evercare Hospice and Palliative Care, providing comfort and spiritual care for patients and families, as well as the staff of this unique ministry. He is currently staff chaplain of Coliseum Medical Center. The Bishop is passion ate about this ministry and spends much of his time with those in spiritual distress. ’’The hospital is my church and my congregation changes daily,” he said. A graduate of the National Academy of Mortuaiy Sci ence, Varga earned his Mas ter’s in Ministry from Mount Carmel Seminary and holds a Doctorate in Sacred Theology from Holy Cross Reformed Catholic Seminary and a Doctorate in Ministry from the Metropolitan Theological Seminary in Nashville, TN. ”1 am honored to be a part of this blessed event,” he said. ”It is nice to know there are people in the world who truly care for one another, espe cially in the troubled times we face as children of God.” Audrey George, known by many as Chef Audrey for her cooking skills, is a member of New Hope Missionary Baptist Church. She is on the ministe rial staff training to preach the Word of God. She is known for her love of Jesus and has redeemed facebook for the Kingdom of God with two groups where she is the overseer: The Living Words Ministry Intercessory Prayer Group and The Fasting and SEeking the King Group. Each group has over 50 members. George is also known for her work in the community, singing adding to her lifestyle as a Christian Comedian. She performed her first show locally in June and is also a Certified Personal Trainer. ”1 am truly blessed with the direction my life has been going the past few years, fol lowing where my King leads,” she said. ’’Now to be asked to be a part of the blessing, I am so humbled and honored at the same time.” George said that this is such a special way to comfort the families of Sandy Hook, let ting them know that God has not forgotten them. ’’There are people here in Byron, being the hands and feet of Jesus, spreading joy at such times as this,” she said. For the blessing the hand made quilts, lovingly crafted, will be on display at the Welcome Center with a guard at each one. You will notice each quilt is personalized for the individual; each carries a green angel emblem that has come to represent Sandy Hook Elementary. QUILTS, Page 4 Help honor Lil 9th birthday BY VICTORIA SIMMONS The Byron Buzz ”He’s my little man,” said Cathy Holland, of grandson Robert ML Davis (Lil’ Man). Lil’ Man was born at 26 weeks, weighing 2 lbs. 10 oz. with Pulmonary atresia, a congenital malformation of the pulmonary valve in which the valve orifice fails to develop. Since the valve is completely closed it ob structs the outflow of blood from the heart to the lungs. The body requires oxygen ated blood for survival. This eight-year-old has endured numerous opera tions to try and correct the problem but for him, there is nothing which can save his life because there is nothing in his body to attach a trans plant to, which would be a lifesaver. He is on five liters of oxygen and has less than one third of one lung. The doctors say, according to Holland, that he should not be alive. ”God has him here for a reason. I just take care of him,” she said. Lil’ Man gets an autograph from Richard Petty at the Racers’ Reunion. He is not a NASCAR fan but was happy to get the autograph. ’ Man’s wish Doctors have not given him a length of time to live, it could be at any time. His Nana, (Holland) says it is a miracle he is still alive though the prognosis is not good. In fact, doctors have said it is time for Hospice to come in but Holland is not yet ready to relinquish her care of him because she is doing everything which needs to be done now, not ing that when things do get worse she will yield to Hospice. Lil’ Man will turn nine years old on November 5th. He is a fanatic about Legos’ and the one thing he would like for his birthday is to visit Lego Land in Atlanta. Karla Chidester, chair of the Battle of Byron Commit tee, wants to help make that wish a reality for him and his family. She is asking people in the community to donate $9, or whatever they can toward this goal to honor the birthday wish. If checks are made to the Battle of Byron, a non-profit organization, donations will be tax deduct ible. (If you do write a check please note on the memo line for Lil’ Man’s birthday wish.) A while back Lil’ Man had requested to see his favorite singer, Natasha Benefield, through the Make A Wish Foundation. They said she was unavailable and instead gave them tickets for attrac tions in Atlanta and did not help them get there or give any help with Lil’ Man who has to carry an oxygen tank. The oxygen tank has to be changed out every few hours and of course, Lil’ Man has to use a wheelchair to get around for long periods at a time. Holland is appreciative of what they did but also a little disappointed. Lil’ Man, is a typical eight- year-old, Holland says. He is home-schooled and just recently managed to ride his bike without training wheels. His oxygen tank makes the bike off balance so, that in itself was quite a feat. In ad dition to Legos, he loves mu sic. Because of no immune system, the Hollands do not take Lil’ Man into enclosed areas, only open spaces. ”He has been through it,” Hol land said, ’’But he still acts like nothing is wrong. He’s a tough little guy.” Lil’ Man, the son of Kath ryn Danielle Davis and Wil liam Morgan, has been with his grandparents, Cathy and M.L. Holland for most of his life. He has one sister, Mya Morgan and one brother, Steven Todd, which he sees from time to time. His other grandparents are Robert and Lyla Morgan. Cathy’s husband, M.L., has terminal lung cancer so she has her hands full as a caregiver to both.
