THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 12, 2013 THE GEORGIA POST 5 OBITUARIES} Eleanor L. Cox Greeter at Musella Baptist Church Eleanor L. Cox, 72, of 5121 Causey Road, Lizella, Georgia, died Thursday, September 5, 2013. Memorial services were held on Monday, September 9, 2013 at Musella Baptist Church with the Reverend Joe McDaniel officiating. In lieu of flow ers, the family has requested that donations be made to Musel la Baptist Church, 5430 US Highway 341 N, Musella, Georgia 31066 or Heartland Hospice, 200 Northside Crossing, Macon, Georgia 31210. Mrs. Cox was a member of Musella Baptist Church where she was a greeter and sang in the choir. She was the daughter of the late Paul Pittman and the late Juanita Ruth Nolan Pittman and was predeceased by two children, Lisa Ann Cox and Gerald Dean “Bird” Cox, II. Born in Middlebourne, West Virginia, Mrs. Cox graduated from New Philadelphia High School in New Philadelphia, Ohio in 1959. Mrs. Cox is survived by her husband of fifty-one years, Ger ald Cox of Lizella; daughters, Louise A. Young (Gary) of Por- syth and Laurie A. Yanders (Jay) of New Philadelphia, Ohio; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sisters, Nancy Cox of Naples, Plorida and Mary Kay Horton of Canton, Ohio. Register online at www.hartsmort.com. It was a blessing to me because I’m still being worked on and so are you. As the songwrit er states; “please be patient with me; God is not through with me yet.” When He sets through, I or we shall come forth as pure gold.” One thing for sure, I am so glad God Weekly Devotion Angie Carr is not like man. The poem is entitled; “When I Say.” When I say that “I am a Christian,” I am not shout ing that I am clean-living; I’m whispering “I was lost, but now I’m found and forgiven.” When I say, “I am a Chris tian,” I do not speak of this with pride; I’m confessing, I stumble and need Christ to be my guide. When I say, “I am a Chris tian,” I’m not bragging of success; I’m admitting I have failed and need God to clean my mess. When I say, “I am a Christian,” I’m not claiming to be perfect; You can see my flaws, but God believes I am worth it. When I say, “I am a Christian,” I’m not holier than thou; I’m just a simple sinner who re ceived God’s good grace, somehow! Thank God, He knows our faults and shortcoming; but most of all thank God for His Grace and Mercy. They shall follow us all the days of our lives. Deadline for Church Happenings: Friday 5 p.m. God to Joshua Will Everything that Breathes” A parallel exists between President Bashar Assad’s chemical attack against 1500 residents of Damascus, Syria, on 21 August 2013 and Joshua’s conduct of the war against the Canaanites in ancient Palestine (modem day Israel), some 3500 years ago. Assad fired rockets encased with deadly Sarin gas that killed 1500 men, women, and children, all of whom suffered agonizing deaths. Too painful to watch were video images of dead children lined up side-by- side in hospitals. After two years of conflict, the Syrian War has already reached a body count of 100,000 casu alties. In comparison, Josh ua’s Army of Israel killed tens of thousands during the invasion and conquest of ancient Canaan—no one was spared, not even suckling babies. God’s plan for exe cuting the war in Canaan is spelled out in Deuteronomy 20. Inverse 16, God com manded: “in the cities of the nations the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance, do not leave alive anything that breathes.. .Completely destroy them.” In the Battle of Jericho, the Israelites “destroyed with the sword every living thing—men and women, young and old, cattle, sheep and donkeys.. .Then they burned the city. ” Next came the invasion of Ai. Joshua 8:24-26 reads: When Israel had finished killing all the men of Ai in the fields and in the wilderness where they had chased them, and when every one of them had been put to the sword, all the Israelites returned to Ai and killed those who were there.. .Twelve thousand men and women fell that day—all the people of Ai... Joshua burned Ai and made it a permanent heap of mins; he impaled the body of the king of Ai on a pole and left it there until evening.” Joshua then directed Isra el’s attack on southern Ca- '■ 1 V P0NDERINGS Billy Powell naan and the Amorites living there. After capturing five Amorite kings hiding in a cave, Joshua hung them for public spectacle. Advancing northward. Joshua attacked and defeated seven cit ies: Makkedah, Libnah, Lachish, Gezer, Eglon, Hebron, and Debir. Each city was burned and their kings hung. The scripture states: “Every person was put to death. No one was left alive.” Afterwards, Joshua turned his forces northward toward the cities of Hazor, Madon, Shimron, and Achshaph. God instruct ed Joshua to hamstring their horses (cut large tendon in back of horse’s leg) and destroy their chariots. After the conquest of Canaan, the captured territories were divided among the tribes of Israel. The Christian mentality intuitively balks at accept ing the destruction of every man, woman, and child as the holy Word of God. The wholesale slaughter of human beings conflicts with the God of Love in the New Testament and the teaching of Jesus, who taught us to love our enemies and turn the other check. Howev er, Deuteronomy 20: 18 provides God’s reasoning: “Kill them,” God said, “ so there won’t be any of them left to teach you to practice the abominations that they engage in with their gods and you end up sinning against the Lord your God.” Since the people of Canaan worshipped other gods, practiced temple prostitu tion, and engaged in child sacrifice, God eliminated any possibility of intermar riage with the Israelites. There is no compromise to the First Commandment: “Thou shall have no other gods before Me.” BILLY POWELL is a con tributing columnist and has authored many books, www. billypowellbooks.com Some mysteries are tough to solve For my wife’s birthday (I am not allowed to mention which one) I surprised her with round trip tickets to her family reunion in upper New York State. Out of courtesy to her, I elected not to include myself in her little vacation. After all, it is her family and that is just the kind of man I am. I must say I was looking forward to a week in the house by myself, where I could be the absolute boss. Nobody to tell me what to do. Nobody to tell me where to go. For a week, I would be the king of my castle; the captain of my ship; the pilot of my space craft. Actually, I need more than one week to do all of these things. The Gracious Mistress of the Parsonage deserves time off and away from Yours Truly. All year long, she works hard and most of the time has her hands full trying to untangle me from one foil after an other. Lately, it has devel oped into a fuel-time job. The day finally came for me to take her to the airport and see her off. As I kissed her goodbye, my thoughts roved back to the week that lay before me as a freelance husband. All the way back from the airport I played my Barry Manilow CD. I like Barry Manilow because he can’t Smile without Me. Believe me, a smile creased my clock all the way home. One difference between men and women, or may be I should say husbands and wives, is the notion of cleanliness. Wives have the idea that cleanliness is next to godliness. If true, ours is the godliest house on the planet. Even God must wipe his feet before coming into our home. As a man, I see absolutely no connection between cleanliness and godliness. I do my best thinking, not to mention praying, in the midst of clut ter. If godliness is related to happiness, then I am in heaven when I am in the midst of hodgepodge — the podgier the better. Along about Friday afternoon I was absolutely in heaven. The house was a complete wreck and I could not have been happier. About this time, an incident developed that brought me to my senses. I was about ready to take a show er when I noticed the soap and shampoo in my shower were gone. I knew reserves are somewhere in our house but for the life of me; I could not put my fingers on any of it. This is by my wife’s design. Notwithstanding, and I was standing in my birth day suit, I needed to take a shower. Then a brilliant idea struck me. Since my wife has not been home all week, the shampoo and soap in her shower should be in great supply. Snatching my towel from my shower, I headed for hers. One thing I noticed in my wife’s shower was the variety of bottles. Not wearing my glasses, I could not read the labels on any of them. However, I Out to Pastor Rev. James L. Snyder was not here to read bottles, but to take a shower, and so I disregarded the labels. I turned on the shower, ad justed the water temperature and began my shower. I reached for the nearest bottle, which I assumed was shampoo. After dousing my hair with a generous portion, I be gan scrubbing my head. Il noticed, however, no suds. I grabbed another pottle and repeated the procedure with the same results. After using 17 bottles, I finally found one that produced suds. I re member thinking to myself, what does my wife do with all these bottles in her show er that do not do anything? Nevertheless, in a moment I forgot the whole incident, stepped out of her shower and toweled off. I made a cup of coffee and settled into my easy chair to watch a little television. As I sat there, I noticed a strange fragrance. This is the difference between men and women. A man enjoys strange smells. A woman, on the other hand, enjoys fragrant aromas. I smelled a fragrant aroma with a strong tinge of fruit about it. It smelled as if someone had brought me a bowl of mixed of fruit. I knew for a fact, there was no fruit in the house, so this fruity aroma puzzled me. I got up and walked around the house looking for this bowl of fruit. No matter what room I was in, I could smell the fruit. It was the strangest thing I ever experienced. Finally, I went back to my easy chair and cup of coffee not knowing where these fruity fumes were coming from. Some mysteries are tough to solve. Then some thing hit me right between the eyes. The fruity bouquet was coming from me! I took several healthy sniffs and discovered I smelled like a bowl of fruit. I could not un derstand this phenomenon. Then I remember the bottles in my wife’s shower. I went back to investigate and discovered my wife had bottles of fruity concoctions of every variety. A verse from the Bible came to mind. ’’But I have all, and abound: I am full, having received of Epaphroditus the things which were sent from you, an odour of a sweet smell, a sacrifice accept able, well pleasing to God.” (Philippians 4:18 KJV.)
