A memorial service was held Saturday, October 12 at 11:00 am at McLeighton Fu neral Service in Roberta. Vis itation was held one hour prior to the service. Jay is survived by his mother W. Trotter and step-father, Betty Ludine Sanders and Tommy Sanders; his father, Billy C. Trotter, Sr.; a brother, Billy and sister, Tisa. Annie Lilian McElmurray Retired from Robins Air Force Base Graveside services for Annie Lilian McElmurray, 93, of Roberta, were held SaUirday, October 12, 2013 at Bethany Bible Chapel Cemetery (formally Mt. Paran) with the Rev. Mike Lewis officiating. Mrs. McElmurray passed away Thursday, October 10, 2013 at Fort Valley Health Care. She was born May 21, 1920 in Crawford County to Charles Emory Smith and Annie Bonner Smith. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wallace McElmurray and three brothers, Lemont, Travis and Vernon Smith. Mrs. McElmurray was a member of Roberta Baptist Church and was retired from Robins Air Firce Base. She is survived by her son, W. Hugo McElmurray and several nieces and nephews. McLeighton Funeral Home Service of Roberta had charge of arrangements. Lost Book of Bible discovered at Temple King Josiah was the 16th king of Judah, who ruled from 640 to 609 B.C. During the 18th year of Josiah’s reign, the high priest, Hilkiah, found a “book of the law” hidden inside the temple. II Kings 22:8 states: “The high priest Hilkiah said to Shaphan the royal scribe, ‘I have found the book of the law in the house of the Lord.”’ Evidently, the book had been found by workman perform ing temple repairs. Hilkiah took the book to the royal scribe, Shaphan, who read the book to King Josiah. Upon hearing the statutes governing worship, the king became so distraught upon learning how far the religious practices of his time had strayed from God’s commandments that he rent his clothes. Fearful the Lord’s wrath would be rekindled, the king ordered Hilkiah to “go inquire of the Lord for me and for the peo ple of Judah.” In response, the prophetess Huldah spoke for the Lord: “Thus, says the Lord, I am going to punish Jerusalem and all its people, as I warned in the book the king has read.” In recognition of Josiah’s penitence, the Lord said the destruction of Jerusalem would be delayed until after Josiah’s lifetime. Before launching reforms, Josiah assembled “the priests and prophets, all the peo ple, both great and small” and read the book to them. Afterwards, the people joined Josiah in making a covenant with the Lord to keep the laws and commands written in the discovered book. The identity of the book has long puzzled rabbis and scholars. Some say it was the entire Torah; however, in Josiah’s day (six centuries be fore Christ), the 5-book Torah (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuterono my) did not exist in a single corpus. Instead, individual scrolls had been produced of each of the five books, but in limited copies, many of which had been lost. In fact, this particular “book of the law” had been lost for centuries. Notable clues exist regarding the identity of the book, namely, the re forms executed by Josiah directly instituted the specific laws and statues stipulated by chapters 12-26 of Deuteronomy. Of these clues, the clincher was God’s requirement for cen tralized worship at the temple in Jerusalem, which was unique to Deuteronomy. In furtherance of this objective, Josiah removed ah heathen altars from the temple and de stroyed all local shrines and altars outside Jerusalem. Thus, the prevailing evi dence implicates the lost book as being Deuteronomy. Its name derived from the Greek “Deuteronomion” means the “second law”— because Deu teronomy recapitulates the laws contained in the Exodus, Leviticus, and Numbers. After completing the reforms, the king summoned all the people to a Passover celebra tion in Jerusalem to re-conse- crate the temple. The lost book of Deuterono my provided a sad commen tary in Josiah’s time. An even sadder observation in our present day and age is that the Holy Bible is lost. Al though the most-printed and most-distributed book in the world, it is also the most ig nored book in human history. The Bible sits gathering dust on coffee tables.. .waiting for someone to pick it up and read, and therein find God. (NLT) Is it fragrance or a stentch? This past week I had to go to the mall. I know, I should know better but I thought I could sneak in, get what I needed and sneak out again. So much for my thoughts. I wanted to purchase several tie chains for my neckties and searched every jewelry store and nobody had them. Finally, I ordered three online, which would be shipped free, (which always gets my attention) to the nearest store, which hap pened to be in the mall. I do not like the mall and choose not to go there if I can help it. When in the mall I am usually very nervous and get confused and do not know which way I am going. Once I get in, I am not quite sure how to get out again. Everything seems to be contrived to con fuse a person like myself. Looking down at the ground while walking I became rather confused and I happen to turn into an open door. My mall savvy is not sophis ticated in the least. The door I turned into happened to be for the store Victoria’s Secret. I do not know who Victoria is, I did not know what the store was all about but when I got in the store I discovered Victo ria’s Secret much to my great embarrassment. That is exactly the reason I do not like going into the malls. They have places like this that a gentleman, such as Yours Truly, should never enter. I am not sure how I got out of that store, all I can remember was a great deal of hilarious laughter thrown in my direc tion from inside. I just hope they did not recognize me. They probably did not, because I had all my clothes on. It has been a long time since that inci dent and now I had to go and pick up my order. I put together a plan to sneak in very quietly, pick up my order and tiptoe out as quietly as I came in. You know what they say about well-laid plans! Whether mine was well laid or not, it blew up in my face. I did slip into the mall and found the store where my order was. I picked them up and qui etly turned around and started for the door. How I got turned around is any man’s guess. Actually, I think it turned around too many times. For the next 15 minutes, I tried to find the way I came in so I could go out. The trouble started when I hesitated. I stopped to try to get my bearings and in stopping a young woman approached me. “How do you do today, sir,” she said most cheerfully. I nodded and tried to get away as graciously as possible. She would have none of it. “And how do you smell today, sir?” Had I been in my right sense of mind I would have told her I smelled with my nose. Being in a confused state of affairs, I had no quick come back for her. It was then that she intro duced me to her product. I must confess I am not up-to-date with all of the body lotions and per fumes that are available today. I shave in the morning, splash some af tershave on my face, rub some deodorant under my armpits and that is as far as I go. This young woman took me for a potential customer of her body lotions and ointments and perfumes. I suppose many people are con cerned with how they smell. I am not one of them. My basic philosophy along this line is simply, if I cannot stand my own smell, I take a shower. I know when it is time to take a shower when I can smell myself. She wanted to introduce me to some body lotions and oint ments and perfumes that would make me smell alluring to anybody I met during the day. Personally, I do not have a “Bucket List” but if I did this would not be one of the items on it. Trying to be polite, I informed the young woman I was late for an appointment and needed to get on right away. “Oh,” she said very cheer fully, “this will not take long at all.” With that said, and before I could process what she said, she began rubbing my face with body ointment or lotion of some sort. I froze and for a few moments, I could not even move. Even the little grey cells upstairs were shocked into a rare state of stillness. “Now, you smell wonderful.” It was at that time I retired with honor my gentlemanly manners and started running as fast as I could run without drawing too much attention to myself. I smelled that “fragrance” for three days in spite of the fact that I took 17 showers in the meantime. Sometimes our focus is always on the outside. I like what Jesus said, “Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess” (Matthew 23:25). It does not matter how good I smell on the outside if there is stench on the inside. I want to focus on my inside and make it as fresh as possible. That is the fragrance God smells. Rev. James L.
