Vis itation was held on Thursday, October 17, 2013 at McLeigh- ton Funeral Service in Roberta. Graveside services were held Fri day, October 18, 2013 at Bowers Cemetery in Empire, GA. She was bom in Dodge Coun ty and lived in Greston, Bruns wick, Macon and Musella, GA. She was the daughter of the late Lloyd and Pauline Carroll, and wife of the late Ivy H. Bridger. She was a homemaker and retired from Nations Bank. She is survived by one daughter, Faye Bridger Stephenson of Roberta, GA; two sons, Leonard I. Bridger of Musella, GA and Jeff Bridger of Byron, GA; five grandchildren and four great grandchildren; one brother Hollan Carroll of Eastman, GA. Energy assistance program opens November 1st Georgia’s regular Energy Assistance Program will open November l, 2013, for the homebound and elderly (65 years of age and older) households, and on December 2, 2013 for all other eligible households, if funds are still available. Appointments will be made by phone only. The program provides assistance to low-income, elderly, and handicapped households to help pay for their home heating costs. Households participating in the program must meet income criteria and be respon sible for the cost of heating their homes. To be eligible, households must have an income equal to or less than 60 percent of the state median income guidelines - $21,029 for a one-person household, $27,500 for two peo ple, $33,970 for three people, $40,441 for four people, $46,912 for five people, $53,382 for six people, $54,595 for seven people, $55,809 for eight people. Payments will be made primarily by checks to home energy suppliers for gas, electricity and propane used in heating a home. The one -time payments will average about $345 per household. Applicants should contact their local Community Service Center at phone number 1-866-505-2987 to make an appointment or for more information. The program will close when funds are depleted. Appoint ments will be made by phone only. Applicants should have proof of income for the last 30 days for all household mem bers. This proof may be a paycheck stub, or a letter granting public assistance, Social Security, or unemployment benefits. Appli cations must also have a picture ID, social security cards of all household members (proof of age will also need to be provided during the month of November), and their most recent utility or fuel bill. Applicants will also be required to sign citizenship affi davit proving they are a U.S. Citizen. Addi tional information may be required at time of appointment. Households whose fuel costs are included in their rent, or receive a utility check are NOT eligible for assistance. GREA groundbreaking On September 29,2013 the Georgia Retired Educators Association (GREA) broke ground for the Georgia Educators’ Museum and GREA Office complex. The new building will be located in Flowery Branch, GA next door to Hall County Elementary school and across the highway from the Atlanta Falcons’ training camp. Crawford County Retired Educators were repre sented by Rita (State President) and Jimmy Marable, Pat Walton, Sue Thornton (former State President) and Patricia (former State President and present Secretary) and B.J. (former chair of the Foundation Board) Bassett. There were approximately 200 GREA members from over the state at the ground breaking. This building, when completed, will be about 5200 square feet and will be open for tours by educators, families and school groups. Pictured are mem bers of the Museum Governing Board. Paul W. Spillers celebrates 90 years by Le Ann S. Tuggle Special to the Georgia Post Saturday, October 5, Paul W. Spillers celebrated his 90th birthday among family and friends. Paul, a lifelong resident of Crawford County, was the second of six children born to Agnes and A. T. Spill ers. He was married to the late Martha Haralson, and together they had a daughter named Deana. After graduating from Crawford County High School, Paul joined the U.S Navy and was stationed in Norfolk, Virginia. When Paul returned home, he continued to serve his community, first by filling his father’s unexpired term as county coroner, and later by serving as a coun ty commissioner for four terms. Paul and two of his broth ers, Wilbur and James, went into the sawmill business together. The three brothers started out with a portable sawmill, and together with a small crew of workers cut timber in neighboring coun ties. After a few short years, the brothers bought a permanent sawmill located just south of Roberta. The mill business expanded even more to in clude forestry, chipping, and a building supply store. At one point, Spillers Brothers Lumber Company employed nearly 75 employees and pro vided jobs and livelihood for Airman Fields Graduates Basic Training many families in the area. One of the guests at the celebration was Betty Willis Kim, daughter of longtime employee Breakfast Wil lis. She reflected that Paul was not only a great father, husband, and neighbor; but a mighty friend. In 1976, Paul realized there was a need in the area for logging equipment parts. To help satisfy this need, he began yet another business, Central Georgia Equipment, which is now located in Byron. Paul has always been a sports fan, especially when it comes to baseball and basketball. He has followed the Atlanta Braves since they came to Atlanta nearly 50 years ago. If the Braves were playing ball, Paul had the game on TV or on his bedside radio. In his younger days, Paul played baseball and basket ball. Friend Dick Bryant re called, “In the summertime, they had a baseball team that was as good as any pro team. Paul was left-handed and was often called on to bunt. If he got a bunt he could beat the throw to first base because he could run like a rabbit.” He also enjoyed being a referee for high school basketball games in the 1950s Paul W. Spillers, age 90. and 60s. Former player Claire Mattox told of reminiscing about a certain game with Paul officiating. She said. “I couldn’t begin to guess how many games he must have worked in his lifetime and how seriously he took his position as a referee.” A memorabilia wall at the gathering featured many awards that helped tell the story of Paul’s many accomplishments. One of the awards showed Paul’s membership in the local Ki- wanis Club for over 40 years. Another was presented to Paul as a Deacon Emeritus at Roberta Baptist Church, and still another showed over 65 years of membership in the American Legion. Here’s to Uncle Paul for 90 years of hard work and dedication in a variety of en deavors. Thanks for making a difference in our corner of the world. © Fields Air Force Airman Devon C. Fields graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, Texas. The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in mili tary discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physi cal fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills. Airmen who complete ba sic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.
